About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- determine the validity of logical arguments, and prove simple mathematical statements using the rules of symbolic logic and predicate calculus;
- apply induction and recursion to relevant problems;
- demonstrate a theoretical and technical understanding of graphs, and apply this knowledge to solve problems involving minimum spanning trees;
- demonstrate a theoretical and technical understanding of relations, and apply this knowledge to solve problems in cryptography, and topological sorting;
- determine the asymptotic efficiency of a given algorithm; and
- explain the history and status of discrete mathematics as it relates to computer science and digital technologies.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
In the rapidly changing world of information technology and computer science, a solid understanding of the mathematical concepts underpinning different branches of these sciences adds an invaluable dimension to your knowledge. Discrete mathematics provides you with the foundation needed for studies in computer science and mathematics, helping you to think mathematically and use logic and reasoning to solve complex problems. Studying this subject, you will explore the general themes of discrete mathematics: logic and proof, induction and recursion, discrete structures and graphs, as well as algorithm design and efficiency analysis. Focusing on traditional and emerging real-world applications of the discipline, you will learn about digital logic circuits and number systems, cryptography, finding minimum spanning trees and shortest paths in graphs, analysing the efficiency of searching and sorting algorithms, and topological sorting for scheduling.

Assessment 5: Note - Short answer assignment. It is mandatory for students to submit all assignments. The assignment component must be passed in order to pass the unit. Relates to Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 5;
Final Examination: 2 hrs 15 mins. Note - It is mandatory to pass the examination in order to pass the unit. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
