About this subject
On successful completion, a student will be able to:
- Analyse cyber threat methods using the MITRE ATT&CK framework.
- Evaluate national and international cyber defence policies in response to Advanced Persistent Threats.
- Apply open-source intelligence methods to identify and assess threat actors.
- Produce structured and actionable cyber intelligence reports using open-source data and analytic techniques.
- Present and explain how MITRE ATT&CK techniques are used to identify, assess, and respond to cyber threats in national security environments.
- A week-by-week guide to the topics you will explore in this subject will be provided in your study materials.
The ability to collect, analyse, and communicate intelligence is critical for national and organisational security. This unit explores the role of cyber intelligence in identifying and responding to Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs)—state-linked or highly organised groups that conduct sustained and sophisticated cyber operations. Students will learn to map cyber-attacks using the MITRE ATT&CK framework, apply open-source intelligence (OSINT) techniques to investigate threat actors, and produce actionable intelligence reports. The unit also examines Australia’s cyber defence policies, relevant legal frameworks, and broader national security priorities, offering insight into the policy landscape in which cyber intelligence operates. Drawing on real-world case studies and practical exercises, students will develop the skills needed to assess complex cyber threats, communicate effectively across professional environments, and contribute to national and institutional intelligence capabilities in an increasingly contested digital environment.
