About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- In teams, analyse theories and issues surrounding health information quality and accountability in the contexts of mandatory and voluntary reporting, corporate and clinical governance.
- Distinguish between and explain practice models, health information strategies, and technologies for evaluating and improving patient and client care, service and safety.
- Explore contemporary thinking and literature on health information and systems for the purpose of informing the management of healthcare quality and safety.
- Identify and interpret the respective state, territory and national policies, legislation and guidelines relating to patient/client safety; health information, clinical and operational governance; and organisation-wide quality of care.
- Differentiate and apply the health data collection, management, auditing and evaluation methodologies for monitoring and improving health care.
- Health information examined in the context of organisational governance

- Understanding patient care outcomes and linkage to healthcare organisational performance

In this subject, you will learn about the functions of health information examined in the context of organisational governance. You will demonstrate your understanding of the complex interrelationships between people, organisational structure, processes, technology and associated outcomes using case studies. The purpose of the subject is to help you develop understandings of the multi-purposes of health information for health care decision making, providing the critical evidence in patient care outcomes and organisational performance, as it relates to quality service delivery and patient safety. You will use audit tools to measure and aggregate data to illustrate performance and opportunities for improvement. This subject helps you to understand the important role that the Health Information Manager plays in providing performance-based information as well as monitoring and reporting upon clinical data for service improvement opportunities.
This subject is recommended for second-year undergraduate students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management. This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates.
