About this subject
- Describe a range of research informed literacy and mathematics learning processes of young children from birth to 8 years.
- Demonstrate an understanding of relevant theoretical perspectives and concepts in literacy and mathematics teaching for children from birth to 8 years of age.
- Research and develop appropriate and effective learning experiences teaching strategies, including play based and intentional teaching, to shape literacy and mathematics curriculum for children from birth to 8 years of age, in response to relevant current curriculum documents.
- Develop and collate a range of appropriate ideas and resources to support young children's learning in areas of literacy and mathematics, including relevant ICT resources.

In this subject students explore the fundamentals of literacy development and mathematical thinking for teaching and learning for children from birth to 8 years. Students are presented with the theories of early learning alongside the practicalities of shaping appropriate learning experiences for early learners. The notion of curriculum for young children is addressed using the Early Learning Framework and the Victorian Early Years Learning & Development Framework, and the Victorian/Australian Curriculum documents. Pre-service teachers (PSTs) will examine early mathematical concepts and processes; such as one to one correspondence, matching and sorting, memory, spatial reasoning and problem solving; and early literacy concepts and processes, including repetition, imitation, text exploration, reading and a range of texts. Representational processes such as drawing, painting and writing, including left/right orientation will be considered. Music, rhythm, beat and movement will be incorporated as tools of creativity which enhance the development of language, literacy and mathematics.

- Part A: Informing Teaching Practice diagnostic task (200 words) (10%). This assessment task will be undertaken within the first 2 weeks of the term. Part B: Informing Teaching Practice (1800 words) (40%) (50%)
