About this subject
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Describe core behaviour change principles and apply motivational interviewing techniques and core communication principles to facilitate behaviour change in rehabilitation settings.
- Analyse rehabilitation interactions to be able to identify barriers to change, and to critique their own performance in facilitating change.
- Identify and describe barriers to adaptive behaviour change in rehabilitation settings individually and collaboratively in a group of peers.

In this subject, you will be provided with the skills to facilitate adaptive behaviour change process in clients. The subject will address how to motivate clients to change their behaviour i.e.. motivational interviewing, and adhere to the recommendations of health professionals. As well, students will be introduced to techniques to produce better interactions between yourselves, as future practitioners, and your clients; including skills for dealing with clients who are angry, anxious or highly resistant to change.
This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second or third-year.
- In workshop activity and assessment (500 words equivalent) (15%)
- 20 minute group oral presentation (750 words equivalent per student) (20%)
- Completion of Spirit of MI self-assessment tool and written reflection (750 words equivalent) (20%)
- 1750 word written reflection (45%)
