About this subject
After successfully completing this subject you should be able to:
- understand the role of law and policy in shaping and constraining forensic mental health practice;
- gain familiarity with the sources and types of relevant law and policy, and factors contributing to their development over time and in different jurisdictions;
- identify and engage with specific law and policy applicable in forensic mental health settings;
- identify, locate and understand relevant law, including interpreting legislation and case law;
- critically analyse current law/ policy debates/ problems in forensic mental health;
- demonstrate skills in research, written communication, and critical analysis.

This subject concentrates on the legislation and policies that govern the administration of Forensic Mental Health services in Queensland. Policies affecting policing practices, the operation of the Mental Health Court and associated review procedures, and the delivery of services in both Health and Correctional systems are examined in some detail. The subject also compares Queensland legislation and policies with those governing selected interstate and overseas forensic mental health systems.
