This subject introduces students to the course and the expectations of them as they develop into successful university students and future educators.
Students will explore theories of learning and position themselves as learners. This includes undertaking a language competency assessment and exploring the concept of academic integrity with its attendant expectations for research, written communication and oral presentation in academic and professional contexts.
Within the broad concept of education, the development of teacher identity will be informed by an examination of one’s own ethical and socio-cultural values with consideration of educators’ planetary citizenship; cultural diversity and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; along with an educator’s ethical and legislated professional responsibilities, including completion of necessary clearances. It also includes an exploration of personal resilience as an educator.
A key component of the subject will be establishing the Digital Professional Portfolio in which students critically reflect and gather evidence of their capabilities against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Teacher Standards) throughout the duration of the course.

This subject provides an overview of technology enhanced resources commonly used to support teaching and learning. Fundamental skills, attitudes, and approaches that educators require to make effective personal and professional use of such resources in varied educational contexts will be addressed. A key focus will be effective integration of technology to enhance learning, teaching and management processes. Approaches for working in technology-rich educational contexts by which possible harm to one’s self and to others may be minimised through systematic assessment of risk, adoption of safe practices, and ethical behaviour will be explored.

Gain exposure to technology enhanced resources used to support teaching. Evaluate the complexities of the digital world and its impact on education. Sample a range of teaching and learning resources relevant to your development as an educator.

In this subject you will examine theoretical and practical approaches to health education and communication. Based on relevant models and frameworks, you will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to critique, design and deliver health communication and education campaigns using a range of channels and modes. You will build skills to explore and identify the needs of diverse audiences to develop targeted health education and communication strategies and materials, whilst applying culturally sensitive, ethical and equitable perspectives to address population or community health challenges.

Health Education Development

This subject is the first in a sequence of four professional teaching practice focused subjects. The subject will support your understanding and application of key education theories, concepts and skills to develop your professional teaching practice. The first module will introduce evidence-based learning design for secondary teachers to meet the needs of diverse learners. The second module will introduce the theory and application of positive classroom management and the third module will address professional conduct behaviours and effective communication strategies for teachers. This subject is designed to provide a theoretical and practical foundation of essential skills you will need to demonstrate on a school-based professional experience placement. Professional Teaching Practice 1

This subject was previously known as EDC231 Teaching Language and Literacy in Junior Primary.
This subject engages students by developing their knowledge base of language, literacy and literature in the Junior Primary phase of schooling. It expands on this knowledge by encouraging critical analysis of key theories and practices in the teaching of English to diverse groups, culminating in the ability to design purposeful learning opportunities.

An introduction to complex cultural environments and roles interconnected with Indigenous Australian education. Engage in research that interprets Indigenous historical and contemporary themes to inform meaningful teaching practices.

Indigenous Australian Education

This subject explores the nature of the person of Jesus and his core gospel teachings as understood within the Catholic Church tradition. Participants are to understand Jesus’ mission to proclaim the ‘good news’ of the kingdom of God and how this news is applied through the Perth Archdiocesan Religious Education Units of Work to the life experience of students within Catholic school settings. Teaching About Jesus in Catholic Schools

This subject aims to equip students with content and pedagogical content knowledge in integrated STEM education through the context of digital storytelling. Students will engage in knowledge construction, innovative design and computational thinking to creatively communicate STEM concepts related to an issue that they are passionate about. In so doing they will make explicit links to the science, mathematics and technologies curricula. Pedagogical content knowledge will be developed by students through consideration regarding how they would adopt this approach in their future classroom by creating learning-experience implementation plans linked to STEM aspects of the curriculum and appropriate to their degree (i.e. ECE, Primary or Secondary).

This subject examines social, cultural, linguistic, and economic forces which impact on classroom practices and student learning outcomes. The subject requires analysis of the characteristics of classrooms and schools that reduce the effects of inequalities through curriculum choices and pedagogical practices. This subject emphasises the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers associated with student linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic diversity including consideration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in primary school classrooms.

Cultural Contexts in Primary Education

This subject was previously known as EDP383 Health and Physical Education.
This subject introduces students to health and physical education in the contemporary Australian primary school curriculum, where emphasis is on developing children’s health and physical literacies within safe and lifelong learning frameworks so they are able to flourish as healthy and active citizens. With attention to diversity and social justice, children’s rights to develop health and physical literacies within their personal, physical and socio-cultural contexts are explored, and relevant teaching approaches identified. Given the emphasis on evidence-based curriculum design, students will investigate the research that underpins the contemporary curriculum rationale and focus.
This subject reviews ongoing, developmentally appropriate and explicit teaching about health and movement, where children participate safely to develop the knowledge, skills, dispositions and understandings to make healthy and active choices for the wellbeing of themselves and others. In this regard, the importance of physical skills in the early childhood years, including observation and practise of fundamental motor skills (FMS), assessment of FMS and appropriate interventions, is addressed. Advanced movement skills and strategies, components of personal, social and community health, fitness, spatial awareness and games-based teaching models are also explored.
