Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Dementia)

This degree was previously known as Graduate Certificate in Internet Communications.
The Graduate Certificate in Digital and Social Media provides you with an opportunity to learn some of the key aspects of the human dimensions of the Internet: how people network, collaborate, and share information through Internet communications, media and design. Depending on choice of subjects, you will develop skills in one or more of: creating, maintaining and managing online communications for personal and commercial interactions, as well as gaining knowledge of the social and cultural contexts within which those interactions occur. The approach is interdisciplinary: you develop skills in websites, public communication, social network management, collaboration via virtual organisations, and web media production. At the same time you will understand the political, economic and social changes associated with the Internet. By taking this degree, you will add to your existing qualification a basic level knowledge and skills needed for you to become an astute, engaged professional communicator via the Internet.

Graduate Certificate in Digital and Social Media

Expanding on units undertaken in the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma, the Master of Mental Health Nursing aims to expand nursing clinicians’ knowledge and skills in mental health practice and leadership through evidence-based knowledge and practice. Students have the option to pursue a project stream or a research stream within this course. As such, they may complete either a project and two elective subjects, or complete a research dissertation in their final semester. The research stream has a PhD articulation pathway.Both streams consolidate learning from the Graduate Certificate in Mental Health and Graduate Diploma in Mental Health in research, specialist clinical skills and knowledge as well as clinical leadership.Current mental health postgraduate programs in Australia focus on either acute mental health care settings or generic mental health. ACU’s Master of Mental Health Nursing has been developed specifically for nursing clinicians entering into the specialist area of mental health. The course is targeted to new nursing graduates and to those working in mental health but who have no formal postgraduate mental health qualifications.In the current period of mental health service provision reform, there has been a shift in focus from acute inpatient treatment to recovery-oriented practice, so the workforce requires professional development opportunities to keep pace with such changes.Burning Glass data shows there were 1,539 job postings in Australia between July 2021 and June 2022 for Registered Nurses (Mental Health) and of these 10.9% required a postgraduate qualification (Burning Glass Labour Insights, 19 July 2022).

Australian Poetry: Storytelling and the Creative Space

This subject examines the role that poetry and storytelling play in the intervention into, and the construction of, Australian cultures. The subject aims to develop students’ awareness of, and participation in, Australian poetry. Students will gain a broad overview of the history of Australian poetry and develop skills in critical and creative thinking and practice, become familiar with terms and concepts used to describe and analyse poetry, learn how to craft their own poems and develop their own poetic voice. Through a process of critical and creative thinking, reflective practice and creative writing, students will develop insights into how we imagine Australian cultures through poetry and storytelling. They will become aware of the possibilities for imagining their own visions of Australia through their poetry and storytelling creative practice, which includes critical listening, critical reading and critical and creative thinking.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. This subject provides students with a high-level understanding of space systems design and develops skills required to design successful space missions. The subject focusses on mission architecture and design but also covers fundamental space systems design including spacecraft design, orbital dynamics, communications, and a brief overview of space project management. Unpack how space missions are planned, resourced, and carried out. From ground, to launch, and space, this subject is an introduction to the major elements of space missions. Practice project management in space with a mission planning exercise.

Space Mission Design

This subject explores and explains the challenges of operating in space, from the environment of different space bodies to the stresses and difficulties this causes. It also provides an overview of the needs and requirements for, along with the details of, setting up habitats and resource collection. The learning outcomes involve basic understanding of ‘living off the land’ in the sense of utilising resources in-situ as well as using geological landscape and surface materials for building a human base and habitats. This subject will explore past, current and future programs to return humans to the Moon. From the dangers of radiation to the importance of setting up base, you’ll explore the realities of humans surviving in space. Think about visiting the Moon and Mars—their surfaces, resources, and landscapes. Work in teams to design a base.

Operating in Space

Space weather in the Solar System includes the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field found in solar wind plasma. This subject will define these phenomena, describe the origin in the context of the Sun and consider the array of destructive effects they cause on spacecraft, instrumentation and/or planetary bodies. The subject will cover solar flares, coronal mass ejections, the solar wind, and the plasma that makes up the solar wind. Explore weather events in space and how they can disrupt technology and celestial objects. You’ll use your background in STEM to unpack solar winds and radiation. Topics include CMEs and solar flares. Think about ways to minimise space weather impacts.

Space Environment

This subject presents the basic principles, issues and scientific goals in space exploration, and traces its history and development with particular reference to manned versus unmanned space exploration, spacecraft design, launch and navigation, imaging and remote sensing. Public perception of space science and analysis of the costs, risks and benefits of space exploration are discussed with special reference to ethical and legal implications of topics, such as the use of radioisotope fuel sources, &#39;space junk&#39; and mining rights in space.

Launch through the cosmos and trace the history and progress of space exploration. Navigate the risks and benefits. Observe and explore crewed versus robotic galactic missions. Unearth ethical and legal debates. Probe public perceptions. 

This unit explores how sociologists understand the collective challenges of a global world. Research into global issues includes international migration, global cities, the rise of information &amp; surveillance capitalism, global value chains and transnational financial flows, global interconnections of everyday actors and elites and the global consequences of climate change. Students explore the role of local communities and cultures in reshaping and regulating global forces and power structures underpinning globalism, nationalism and cosmopolitanism. We will examine the changing roles of civil society and local community in creating alternatives to the twin powers of states and markets, from successes and failures to future opportunities and emerging risks. By exploring the relationships between space, place and people through contemporary case studies (for example, global cities and social infrastructures, the sociology of risk and crisis, resilience and disasters; global migration, border politics and citizenship rights) students will build on and extend previous learning in theory and methods, with the option of a fieldwork project focused on a case study.

The Urban Century: Movement, Cities and Space

This subject will track the origin and evolution of the space industry from the point of view of exploration of the solar system. We will focus on the multi-disciplinary investigation of all Solar System bodies, from the Sun to the Oort cloud and beyond. We will cover the history of space exploration from ancient to modern times, using ground and space-based methods, including instrument payload and science objectives. The subject will also detail the spin-offs from space-related engineering and science that have benefitted humanity and the economy through this pathway.
