This subject contextualises modern slavery within global politics, focusing on the role and impact of global institutions such as the United Nations and World Trade Organisation. Other specific content focuses on bi-lateral and multi-lateral diplomatic efforts, as well as strategic relationships between nation states. The subject also focuses on practical, multi-stakeholder approaches to tackling modern slavery and human trafficking.

Modern Slavery and Global Politics

This subject was previously known as Online Power and Resistance.The Internet has had a massive impact on our political systems, from grassroots activism through to global politics. This subject helps you to understand how and why this has happened, and why it matters. It explores the new challenges and possibilities for governance created by the Internet, as well as attempts to control the Internet by governments and others. Ultimately, you will come to understand how networked communications are intertwined with long-running political struggles around control and resistance.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Understand the ways in which people try to exert, and resist, power online. Explore why algorithms, censorship, surveillance, and infrastructure matter, and how they might be reshaped.

Graduate Online Power and Resistance

The subject was formerly known as PICX860 Geopolitics and Geostrategy
The international security order is in a period of rapid transformation. This subject examines the major global geopolitical trends, including in the Indo-Pacific, the greater Middle East, Europe, as well as Latin America and Africa. It also analyses the influence of those dynamics on the geostrategies of key countries. Aside from exposing students to the concept of geopolitics as an analytical instrument, the subject will deal with a series of case studies, including the evolving US-Sino rivalry; the Sino-India great power game; the geopolitics of Southeast Asia; the rise of Iran, and the emerging roles of Saudi Arabia and Turkey; the question of the re-emergence of Russia and Germany as great powers; and the Subjected Kingdom in times of Brexit. The subject will provide students with in-depth understanding about the key contemporary global geostrategic dynamics and the implications for regional and international stability.

Get a global perspective on the political issues that affect places like the Middle East and Europe. Flick through case studies from across the years. Discuss contemporary points such as Brexit and the re-emergence of Russia and Germany’s power.

The Geopolitics of Asia

This subject was previously known as Health Promotion Partnerships, Politics and Power.
The new public health demands that individuals not be treated in isolation from the larger social context in which they live, work and play. This subject seeks to extend your understanding of the ways in which we can promote health through the development of healthy public policy and supportive environments. To do this effectively we need to understand the power structures and decision making contexts which shape the health of our society and those that we may need to influence to improve health status. In this subject you will explore systems, policies and political ideologies which impact on health and opportunities to work collaboratively across sectors to reduce health inequities. You will also critically assess corporate influences on health and examine the role of civil society and advocacy in public health. This subject involves both a theoretical and practical understanding of the social determinants of health and contemporary political issues.
