<p>Our understandings and perceptions of crime and the criminal justice system are largely informed by the media and popular culture. This subject investigates how media representations shape public opinion, political policy and criminal justice practices. Students will assess mainstream and alternative sources of media and how these differing sources present and challenge key crime stories. The emerging role of social media will occupy a key role in the subject, including the use of social media by: police to solve crimes and connect with the community, citizens to broadcast state violence and vigilante collectives (such as &#39;Anonymous&#39;) to present perceived failures of justice.</p>

Crime, Media and Culture

<p>The media is a rapidly evolving global industry. To future proof your career in the changing media climate, you need a range of skills and an ability to adapt. In this subject you will focus on screen media, it being the most diverse and prevalent media we are exposed to in everyday life. You will explore the creative language of film and television and learn a range of terms for studying genres and the art of storytelling in audio-visual media. You will analyse feature films and television, and the changing content and ways of watching television. This subject will give you the foundation of methods and skills necessary for researching and studying screen media in varied forms and contexts.</p>
