Shakespeare: Page, Stage and Screen

Australian Literature

This subject will consider major authors and texts, developments and trends in Australian Literature. It examines Australian literature as a regional, national, and international literature with a set of distinct and vibrant cultures. Students will consider the histories, preoccupations, and functions of literature within Australian culture, and topics studied may include: the literary response to place and landscape; colonialism and postcolonialism; class, race and gender; the evolution of Australian literary culture; contemporary developments in Australian writing; and the relationship of fiction, theatre, and poetry to national history.

This subject provides opportunity to study a selection of Shakespearean plays and their stage and screen performance afterlives. Starting from a close consideration of Shakespeare&#39;s dramatic language, the subject will consider the multiple possibilities the plays offer for realisation in performance. Students will explore a range of issues associated with the development of Shakespeare&#39;s scripts for performance, such as the differences between stage and screen adaptation, the relationship between Shakespeare&#39;s language and the visual language of film, and the ways in which Shakespeare adaptations reflect changing cultural perspectives and preoccupations.

Why are certain texts regarded as classics within the English literary canon and how do we encounter them today? This subject considers the importance of tradition to the ways we value, understand and circulate popular and literary texts. Students who successfully complete this subject will have built knowledge of key critical frameworks through which texts can be read and contextualised, and developed introductory skills in academic research on which to base further work in literary studies, including creative writing and screen studies.
