This subject is for non-law students only. It provides foundational knowledge of the Australian legal system and legal principles for business organisational structures and their underlying regulation. Topics include the Australian legal system and business law, structures and corporate governance, member’s rights and remedies, corporate finance and liability, companies in distress, external administration, financial services law and more. You&#39;ll focus on the legal framework for the provision of financial advice and financial products and requirements and obligations of the Australian financial services licensees under Chapter 7 of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth). You&#39;ll grasp the use of statute and case law in analysing commercial relationships, and gain skills in finding relevant law using legal libraries. These skills are vital in many professions, such as executives, auditors, accountants, management consultants, financial planners/advisers, administrators, and teachers.

Issues in Commercial and Financial Services Law

This subject examines the fundamental principles of income tax law, including capital gains. You will gain an understanding of the workings and implications of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 and cognate legislation such as the Taxation Administration Act 1953 and the Fringe Benefits Tax Assessment Act 1986. This subject will help you to understand the complexities of how taxation law operates – including the working of the goods and services tax under A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999. You will also explore the principles of statutory interpretation, while developing your legal research, writing and critical thinking skills to benefit your ongoing professional development.

Taxation Law

As a result of a global interest in sports, both on and off the field, there is a demand for skilled professionals with a practical understanding of sports-related legal matters. Studying this subject equips you with a specialised knowledge in a range of contemporary legal issues associated with sport, as well as critical thinking skills about policy and society at large.
