This course builds a foundation for a successful career in journalism, strategic communication and public relations. Critical reflection will allow students to examine their roles as ethical and socially responsible professionals in a dynamic and changing communication landscape.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have successfully completed 1505LHS Introduction to Communication and Journalism at Griffith University because they are considered academically equivalent.

News and Information Gathering is a practical examination of the realities of news research and news gathering in the key rounds, or specialist reporting areas that exist in real newsrooms around the world. These include reporting tasks such as media conferences andÂ reporting court and council. The key journalistic rounds of crime and courts, politics and parliaments, councils, health and education, social issues, sport and leisure, economics and finance, science and specialties and consumer affairs will be covered.Working with an experienced teacher you will complete practical news gathering and writing tasks. You will meet deadlines, reflect on ethical issues, apply your understanding of media law and gather news across a range of fields. The online forum component of the subject encourages you to relate your practical work to the relevant literature in the area and discuss your views with your peers. Delve into the challenges and constraints of journalistic research. In this subject you will explore difficult and complex decisions within the professional environment. You will also be presented with opportunities to work through practical problems.The subject encourages you to develop a systematic approach to information gathering that reflects your own style and interests. While producing a range of news writing assignments, you must meet tight deadlines, confront ethical uncertainties and work across a range of fields. News and Information Gathering

Students learn the essential research and writing skills required for their dynamic roles as media and communication professionals. These include information selection and management, data analytics, fact verification, critical appraisal, source selection, and various genres of communication writing.

Start to think and write like a journalist. You’ll learn how to find and use credible information. And how to write up your facts into news stories. Gain confidence as a writer who people can trust and rely on. 

Focus on researching, writing and producing news and current affairs stories for television and online. You will explore: History of broadcast journalism; Radio and television; The newsroom; The studio; Writing for broadcast; The line-up; Voice and presentation; Camera and sound; Principles of interviewing; The edit; The pitch; Story planning and production and the practice of mobile journalism. You will need to have access to the internet on a computer with standard modern inclusions (Mic and Webcam).
Broadcast Journalism is designed to extend and develop the skills introduced in second year Journalism subjects with a focus on researching, writing and producing news and current affairs stories for television and online. ThisÂ unit also includes advanced techniques in media presentation, production, problem solving and the student&#39;s critical evaluation of their own performance.

Broadcast Journalism

Explore how journalism is theorised and practised in a global media environment. Firstly, you will look at the different roles of journalism as a global cultural resource and examine international case studies based on current events. You will be encouraged to nominate locations on which to focus analysis.
Upon completion of this subject you will have a deeper understanding of the theoretical approaches to journalism as a global cultural practice, the ways in which journalism operates in the global media environment, how journalism is practised across cultures, the nature and extent of alternative media approaches internationally and the relationships between journalism and other social institutions.

International Journalism

Learn about the different ways that information and news is gathered and reproduced. You will learn about the range of print and electronic media professions that exist in today&#39;s information society and explore global trends and issues arising from the growth of information media. The subject introduces news style, exploring how to gather information and write on a range of key topics across news genres. You will also examine ethical issues faced by journalists and consider such issues in connection to your own stories using the framework of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) Code of Ethics. These issues will be analysed and discussed in essay form.

Question news writing styles and techniques across a range of genres. Take a closer look at effective news story structure. Investigate journalism ethics in a global media world. Hone your ability to use your personal judgement while pursuing stories.
