Interior designers work to ensure quality environments for a diverse range of users and functions. The Higher Education Certificate Interior Design prepares students in the world of design and leads students into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Interior Architecture).

Undergraduate Certificate in Interior Design

This degree was previously known as Bachelor of Arts (Interior Architecture).
Interior designers, as qualified professionals in Interior Architecture, design quality environments for a diverse range of users and functions. They coordinate the design and construction of building interiors including commercial, workplace, hospitality, medical, gallery, and retail environments. In addition, interior designers may be involved with more transient environments and the associated displays for trade fairs, exhibitions, museums, and public events. Their skills and knowledge are also utilised for adaptive reuse of existing buildings and conservation of significant sites. Interior designers require skills and understanding in all aspects of design, including technical knowledge of interior construction, equipment and building systems. They must also exercise ability in communication and administrative skills. The degree also provides a sound basis for more specialised careers and study in areas such as furniture or set design, education and/or research.
This degree is highly respected in the interior design industry, both nationally and internationally, and has alliances with a number of national and international universities which encourage student exchanges and national and international field trips. Students are encouraged to compete in national and international competitions, in which Curtin students always do very well.
In order to complete this degree, students are also required to complete at least 80 hours&#39; work experience in the industry before graduation.

Study the interior design and construction of diverse spaces, plus the re-use of buildings. You’ll explore lighting, ventilation, acoustics and furniture in theory and in practice. Graduates are professionally recognised by key design institutions.

Bachelor of Applied Science (Interior Architecture)

The program offers a balance of theory, technology, and creative experimentation. Theoretical aspects of design are combined with technical knowledge of building systems, materials, interior construction, and communication techniques. Work Integrated Learning is embedded throughout the course with relevant practical work and professional experience to fulfil course requirements. The program is taught by active research and practice professionals, ensuring the program is relevant to local and global market conditions. Interior Design at Curtin contributes to the University&#39;s links with industry bodies and professional organisations.﻿Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.

Bachelor of Interior Design

This program replaces both the Bachelor of Arts (Interior Architecture) and the Bachelor of Applied Science (Interior Architecture).Interior designers, as qualified professionals in Interior Architecture, design quality environments for a diverse range of users and functions. You can select from one of the following specialisations:<ul><li>Construction Management - Develop an understanding of the principles and processes surrounding building construction and management, specifically focusing on low and high rise construction, building surveying and construction contracts.</li><li>Planning and Geography - Learn about key concepts and approaches for understanding cities as cultural landscapes, including urban and regional planning principles, governance, social geographies of cities, geographical analysis, and spatial experience at an urban scale.</li><li>Animation and Game Architecture - Learn the fundamentals of animation and game design, such as techniques for 3D modelling and animation, development of creative and compelling visuals, and the use of motion graphics and game related technologies. This specialisation connects closely with architectural presentation techniques and the creation of inspiring built environments.</li><li>Digital Design Specialisation - Ideal for people who are interested in gaining fundamental skills and knowledge in Web and UX Design. This specialisation can boost students&#39; employability by developing digital design problem solving skills and deepening understanding of how to create engaging digital experiences.</li><li>Architectural Technology Specialisation - Designed exclusively for Interior Architecture or Interior Design students, develops understanding of the built fabric and structures surrounding the interior including sustainability practices, building science and digital fabrication.</li></ul>Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications. The honours component prepares students to develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional work, research and further learning corresponding to AQF level 8 qualifications.

Under the direction of experienced Interior Design practitioners students are offered a professional environment which incorporates a breadth of practice and academic experiences relevant to the discipline of interior architecture. Each student will initiate and develop an individual Interior Architecture design project aimed at developing their design expertise. Students are required to identify, explore and extend their chosen project, testing spatial ideas and concepts in relation to human occupation beyond pre-existing and embedded assumptions and inclusive of cultural and international perspectives. Students are encouraged to demonstrate innovative, reflective design practice, drawing from their existing body of work to demonstrate an emerging identity as a designer, while demonstrating command over relevant practice conventions and communication techniques and strategies. Interior Architecture Project Studio 1

This subject enables the opportunity for students to pursue their major research project topic towards resolution. In consultation with their supervisors, students will have the opportunity to further develop their learning towards resolution of the research project. Core theory, technological strategies, and/or practices continue to be interrogated at an advanced level. Students are required to appropriately structure their research strategies in relation to the evolution of their particular topic, deploying appropriate methodologies and methods. Projects are expected to be framed within appropriate interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary theoretical and practice-based discourse. The work produced in this final research Studio is expected to demonstrate an awareness of and contribution to strategic and disruptive design thinking and practice. In resolution, the design methodologies and communication strategies are expected to challenge assumptions, to challenge what is already known by envisaging, speculating on, and/or demonstrating new design thinking and practice, and is expected to contribute to discipline knowledge.

Interior Architecture Research Studio 2

This subject was previously known as BIA370 Exploration and Manifestation of Interiors.
This innovative subject examines narratives of occupation, of use, and of making, as embedded in designed products that constitute the interior. Through a series of explorations and testings, students use technology to create a prototype object that has purpose and feasibility for the design industry. Emphasis is placed upon future-thinking and finding simple ways to communicate narratives of construction, use, and occupation. Practices of environmental sustainability are also considered in students’ final products.

Each student will initiate and develop an individual project aimed at enhancing their design expertise. Core theory, technological strategies, and/or practices continue to be interrogated at an advanced level. Students are required to appropriately structure their research strategies in relation to the evolution of their particular topic, deploying appropriate methodologies and methods. Interior Architecture Honours Project

This subject encompasses the role and relevance of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research in contemporary design practice, reflecting on, synthesising, and building discipline-related knowledge and expertise. Students select a topic of particular personal relevance and interest, to interrogate, position and develop a research project in consultation with their supervisor.
