This subject was previously known as Indigeneity: A Global Experience.This subject promotes understanding of contemporary Indigenous communities around the globe. It considers the importance of Indigeneity as central to discussions on the world stage and to some extent at the nation-state level. You will spend some time comparing Indigenous communities in Australia with those around the globe by applying concepts and thinking used in Indigenous Studies. The subject provides you with important conceptual and background information which will be of great use in a range of professional environments; from social work to policy making.

Global Indigenous Experiences

This subject promotes a deeper understanding of Indigenous Australia: past, present and future. When studying, you will consider the varied experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of identity, diversity, representation and resilience. The subject provides you with important conceptual and background information which will be of great use in a range of professional environments; from social work to policy making.

Introduction to Indigenous Australia

In this subject you will examine the history of relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples, using the notion of whiteness to understand dispossession, resistance, adaptation and survival of Aboriginal peoples in Australia. Models of community development and cultural awareness will enable you to develop strategies to equip you for working with Aboriginal people in a variety of professional practices. You will be challenged to examine and reflect on the self as a conscious personal and professional actor within the dynamic of ethnic interchanges. This subject is developed and taught by Oorala Aboriginal Centre staff.

Grow your cultural awareness for better working relationships with Aboriginal people and the community. Explore the dominant concept of whiteness and start to think about Aboriginal perspectives. Learn through both historical and self reflections.
