Race, Crime and Justice

<p>Drawing on the Australian context, this course examines the contemporary and historical significance of Indigeneity in structuring patterns of law making, offending, victimisation, criminal justice system responses and experiences; and considers new forms of crime prevention and innovative justice practices. Emerging issues relating to ethnicities, crime, victimisation and the criminal justice system will also be addressed.</p><p>In Australia there is on-going public and governmental concern for the recognition of Indigenous peoples rights and, more recently migrant and other culturally diverse groups. Crime control policies/programs and operation of the Australian criminal justice system are frequently critiqued for being inequitable, intolerant and ignorant towards Indigenous peoples and also ethnic minorities. It is essential that students of criminology and criminal justice have an understanding of how Indigeneity and ethnicities impact crime, victimisation and the criminal justice system. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the foundation from which they can begin to develop this understanding.</p>
