Database Fundamentals

This subject covers important concepts of database management systems and recent developments in the area. How various database technologies are utilised to support the need of modern database systems. Several well known RDBMS and non-RDBMS platforms will be observed. Advanced application and implementation of database management systems, such as data analytic queries, non-relational databases and complex data types will be covered as well. Case studies using real industry-based sample dataset and problems will enrich students&#39; experiences. Future trends of database management systems will also be studied and discussed to broaden students&#39; horizon to deal with future advancement in the area.

Database Management Systems

This subject starts with an overview of the architecture and management of database systems, and a discussion of different existing database models. The main focus includes relational database analysis, design, and implementation. This subject prepares students for subjects such as the final year industry project which require an understanding of database design and implementation. The students learn: relational algebra as the formal foundation of relational databases; relational conceptual design using an entity-relationship diagram; relational logical database design; foundation of normalisation; security and integrity; and SQL implementation of relational database queries. Students are required to design a database application that meets the needs of a system requirement specification, and to implement the system using a commercial standard database system such as ORACLE or POSTGRESQL. In addition, a selection of advanced topics in databases will be introduced and discussed.

The digital transformation of business operations has led to an increasing demand for accounting and business professionals to develop information and communications technology (ICT) skills. This subject is designed to develop your ICT skills in the context of accounting practice. You will apply the key concepts and principles underlying the recognition, measurement, recording and provision of accounting information using accounting information systems that are powered by information technologies, business intelligence, and accounting software. You will also learn to employ these tools to develop, manage and control accounting information systems, as well as to critically evaluate the relevance and sufficiency of such systems and communicate the findings to relevant stakeholders.
