This subject integrates the natural and social sciences to place contemporary maritime issues into a broader context. Its objective is to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary introduction to the management of uses of the international marine environment. It includes a series of lectures on oceanography, marine biology, chemistry and international law as enabling instruction for the more complex lectures to follow. International Marine Management incorporates distinct yet interconnected themes: commercial resource exploitation (living and non-living); tourism, recreation and other non-extractive commercial uses of the oceans; shipping; piracy and other important security matters; conservation of the environment; and emerging techniques and findings in marine scientific research. The oceans are steeped in lore and tradition, and much of this is now codified into international law. In addition, oceans are complex, diverse and interdependent environments and understanding the dynamics from a scientific perspective (in basic terms) is critical. The overarching approach of the subject is to explore our stewardship of the world’s oceans as global commons and therefore through the rule of international rather than domestic law. The differences between the two legal regimes will be explained in an introduction to international law lecture. Completing the subject will equip students from a wide variety of academic disciplines with the ability to view the world’s oceans from a more holistic perspective. Your new knowledge will assist you to understand the scientific basis for international policy decisions and legal approaches, or help you to refine the structure of your own marine scientific research so that it may have greater utility in policy and law formulation.

International Marine Management

This subject introduces students to the science disciplines underpinning the study of marine and Antarctic environments and the application of science to solve problems in marine and Antarctic disciplines. It provides the foundational skills and knowledge for students in the Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science for specialised study in years 2 and 3.Topics that are covered include:• an understanding of Gondwana and geology of Antarctica, sub-Antarctic islands and the surrounding ocean;• ice and climate studies;• the physical and chemical nature of the Southern Ocean;• the terrestrial and marine environment of the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and cool temperate areas, including plants, animals, birds and fish;• the impact of humans on marine and Antarctic environments, including the study of global climate change.Students will benefit from lectures delivered by experts in their field, including guest lecturers, and further develop their understanding through in-class debates and hands-on fieldwork and laboratory practicals (available online).

A deeper scientific exploration of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Dive into the science of ice, climate, and oceanography. Take a look at the geology of Antarctica and the plants, animals, birds and fish that inhabit the region.

Seventy percent of the planet is covered by ocean. This subject introduces students to Planet Ocean through four modules, covering key topics on marine life and the ecology of temperate and high latitude marine ecosystems (Module 1); the ocean system as interactions between physical, chemical, geological and ecological features (Module 2); the role of the oceans in climate change and how climate change affects ocean life and ocean processes (Module 3); and finishes up by considering the responsibilities of humans in the stewardship of the oceans; how human activity impacts the oceans and the challenges and approaches to ocean stewardship (Module 4). We cover the origins of life in the oceans, iconic and ‘weird’ marine life, ‘a day in the life’ of an oceanographer, and a number of topics highly relevant to modern society including technologies for ocean science, responding to climate change, threatened species, and sustainable management of marine resources including fisheries.

KSA101 will provide a background to the science and management of the seas with focus on Antarctic and Southern Ocean. On the completion of this subject, students will demonstrate a knowledge and comprehension of the contemporary issues facing Antarctic, marine and coastal environments, and the management strategies used to optimise the value (market and non-market) of these areas.

Explore Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. You’ll learn how governments manage the southernmost coasts and seas of the world. Cover contemporary issues as well as some historical, legal, and political topics.

Ongoing advances in molecular technology, statistics and bioinformatics have revolutionized our ability to gather and apply genetic information. This unit deals with the distribution of genetic variation among individuals, populations and species, and the relevance of such variation to evolutionary processes. Specific topics include selection and adaptive potential; mutation; inbreeding; population divergence; speciation; effective population size and extinction risk. Approaches to the study of genetic variation are explored at levels ranging from pedigree analysis to molecular genomics. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of evolutionary genetics to the conservation, management and restoration of wild populations.Learning in this unit enhances student understanding of global challenges identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) Life on Land.

Evolutionary and Conservation Genetics

Conservation efforts globally are focussed primarily on biodiversity, but geodiversity elements and features such as soils, rivers, mountains and caves provide humans with awe and inspiration, enjoyment, and a wealth of ecosystem and geosystem services. In this subject, you will learn about how to recognise geodiversity elements as critical system supports for biodiversity and ecosystem function, and to appreciate their cultural and recreational value for society. Using a series of masterclasses with global experts (in-field, in person and online), you will be immersed in the practices of geoconservation and &#39;geotourism&#39;. With no prior knowledge or skills required, you will develop skills as a communicator and conservation professional, and learn how to: - Rank and assess geodiversity elements (as &#39;units&#39; of conservation) and features in terms of their rarity, uniqueness, importance to science and society, - Construct inventories of abiotic, biotic and cultural elements and values for recreation and reserve establishment - Undertake in-field degradation assessments of landscapes used by humans for tourism and production - Recommend management strategies to restore landscape features and values for human enjoyment and wilderness protection - Undertake decision-making in a range of modes – graphical, consensus methods, GIS methods and qualitative methods. - Communicate landscape features and conservation strategies to a broad range of audiences and stakeholders. Any student interested in how to undertake conservation practice, curate heritage, restore degraded environments, assess landscape suitability for tourism and other ventures, or to communicate natural values will find KGA527 useful. All skills and knowledge required to successfully complete KGA527 are developed within the subject.Online students should note that there is a requirement for some &#39;live&#39; online participation in order to complete &#39;assurance of learning&#39; assessment tasks.

Landscape Conservation and Recreation

This subject develops the student&#39;s knowledge of the role and responsibilities of Marine Surveyors and the skills that are necessary for carrying out marine survey work and the preparation of subsequent survey reports. It also considers a number of different survey categories and the respective roles of a number of national and international authorities such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its conventions, the maritime classification societies, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and Port State Control authorities.

Marine Surveying and Inspection

This subject develops the student&#39;s knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the Marine Superintendent and the management skills that are required for ensuring that the maintenance of all shipboard machinery and equipment is carried out to standards specified by national and international certifying authorities. It covers the management of documentation, reports and other data regarding ship mechanical and electrical equipment, the development of documented processes, procedures and safety instructions, the reporting of audit and inspection findings and the management of employees involved in the marine superintendency process

Marine Superintendency

This subject gives students an understanding of the functional purpose of the machinery systems used on board a variety of ships. This knowledge can then be applied to obtaining effective engineering design solutions for these systems, so that they can meet their functional purposes within national and international statutory and regulatory frameworks.

Design of Marine Machinery Systems

You will critically explore conservation issues from a psychological perspective, and apply psychological principles of advertising and behaviour change to facilitate behaviour change in support of conservation of threatened species and environments.You will will develop an advanced understanding of the conservation and biodiversity crisis in the 21st century; and theories and psychological principles of behavioural change and ethical issues associated with the application of these principles. You will apply their understanding of wicked problems in conservation to develop new ways of thinking to address these problems by the use of science and communication through new media to portray conservation issues accurately and effectively in order to facilitate community action and behaviour change to support conservation of threatened species and environments.
