This subject provides an introduction to health psychology in the Australian context. You will learn about how psychological theory can be applied to understanding health enhancing behaviours and health risk behaviours. Delve into the connections between people’s minds and bodies to better understand wellbeing. You’ll explore both the positive and risky behaviours that can influence people’s health. Touch on the connection between stress and illness. 

Counselling and Advice on Medicines focusses on patient-centred care with patient counselling concepts and application of communication skills in clinical scenarios. This patient-centred care is extended to the study of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Principles of drug therapy such as adverse reactions, drug interactions, medication adherence, patient counselling are discussed and applied to simulated cases.

Counselling and Advice on Medicines

Sport, games, and play are a part of everyday life. Formal or informal, solitary or shared, physical or virtual, realistic or fantastical, organised or spontaneous, games are a means of escaping the ‘real’ world or exploring it in new ways. Our shared values can be demonstrated through play, either by celebrating those we deem to be ‘good sports’ or shaming those who don’t play ‘in the spirit of the game’. But how are these norms of ‘fair play’ shaped, by whom, and how can they change over time? How can urban sports such as skateboarding and parkour be seen as ‘subversive’ and framed as a public menace, and yet offer opportunities for personal expression and communal belonging? How are video games shaping new understandings of both fun and competitive interactions, and how are e-sports influencing the future of play?Meanwhile, more ‘traditional’ forms of sport are undoubtedly among the most influential in Australian society. No less than three Australian Test cricket captains and tennis players have been recognised as Australian of the Year. Prime Ministers and other political leaders desperately promote their team affiliations to make themselves relatable, and Victoria has not one, but two public holidays dedicated solely to sporting events. But why is this the case? Why does sport seem to possess such an enormous influence in Australian society? Sport can unite us and foster community-building, but it can also divide us through forms of exclusion based on race, gender, sexuality, faith, age, and class. In short, sport may claim to be ‘fair’ while in reality proving ‘foul’. In this subject, we address debates around sports and games and explore how forms of play can create welcoming social spaces.This is an online, entirely asynchronous subject, meaning there are no live lectures or tutorials. Instead students can work through the content on their own schedules (while, of course, keeping in mind the assessment deadlines).In 2025 this subject will commence on January 6 and end around February 21. However, it is possible to submit the final assessment prior to the deadline and complete the subject earlier.

The Politics of Play: Contemporary Issues in Sports, Games, and Leisure

In this subject you will learn the essentials of human nutrition that improve and sustain optimal performance for sport and exercise for athletes and active individuals. This subject will cover topics including assessment of energy needs, dietary intake and body composition in athletes; training and competition nutrition, sports foods and supplements; nutrition for specific sports and life stages and current issues in sports nutrition.

Weigh up the nutritional demands of athletes. Isolate nutrition’s role in muscle gain or fat loss and optimising performance. Tackle subjects like sports supplements, fluid intake and the nutritional challenges that can affect older active individuals.

Nutrition for Sports Performance

This subject introduces students to major theoretical and empirical perspectives on the psychology of health and wellbeing. It examines the psychosocial determinants of health and wellness as well as psychological theories of health protection and illness prevention. Issues relating to the psychological aspects of illness causation and interpretation, prevention, maintenance of primary prevention, and chronic diseases will be covered. Further, the subject will cover major sources of stress and models of stress and coping. Mechanisms, theories and principles of behaviour change will be explored, as well as communication skills needed to work with groups and individuals engaging in behaviour change. As such, experience in team-building will feature in this subject as students will serve as a resource for each other&#39;s learning experience.

As a result of a global interest in sports, both on and off the field, there is a demand for skilled professionals with a practical understanding of sports-related legal matters. Studying this subject equips you with a specialised knowledge in a range of contemporary legal issues associated with sport, as well as critical thinking skills about policy and society at large. You will develop advanced knowledge in a range of legal issues relating to sport in Australia, including aspects of international interest. As well as gaining valuable skills in the critical evaluation of how sport and the law interact, you will explore of a range of emerging sports law issues and the future directions governing sports law. Sports Law

Approximately one-third of all individuals reporting somatic complaints also have anxiety disorder and / or depression. Thus, many people presenting to health practitioners will also have mental health conditions. One aim of this subject is for you to be able to identify mental health conditions, and some core principles of working with people with such conditions. People presenting for assistance in rehabilitation settings also frequently present in a state of distress - for instance, persistent pain, anger, anxiety, and shame - which can have a substantial impact on how well such people progress. It&#39;s therefore important for you to have a thorough knowledge of these states, how they can impact on a person&#39;s behaviour, and core principles of working with people in such states. As well, you will be asked to apply these principles in analysing how to tailor your approach when working with people with these conditions. This subject is designed for second-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second year.

Mental Health and Rehabilitation

This subject explores the features of child language and how children acquire language. From infancy to primary schooling years, it examines the development of specific linguistic features and also the cognitive processes behind language acquisition. The focus is not just on first language acquisition but also considers the acquisition of additional languages and children who are multilingual from a very early age. This subject will be a useful introduction to the topic for those who are generally interested, thinking about their own child(ren)&#39;s development or planning to work with children.

Study the influences on typical human growth and development with a focus on emerging motor and social behaviours.Learn the different aspects of human development across the three domains of development: physical, cognitive and psychosocial. Dominant theoretical approaches are presented and considered together with information about infant development and pregnancy. In addition, basic skills relating to building and presenting an argument, accessing and using professional literature, making an observational record, creating documents to professional standards, and managing one’s self under pressure will be covered.
