Urban and regional planning is about improving the quality of cities and regions. The spaces in which we live, work and play are profoundly influenced by the way land is used and developed. By setting visions and policies for building and land use, planning professionals play a significant role in creating these spaces.This subject provides an introduction to the language and processes of planning in relation to land use and built form. Different land-use and development situations will be explored, including how they interact with broader societal contexts.This will provide a deeper understanding of planning practice, and its real-world influence.

Planning for Land Use and Built Form

Plans are vital instruments in urban and regional planning. They envisage the future of a local environment and shape land use and development practice.Making plans requires a diverse skill set, including site analysis, data analysis, mapping, plan drawing, and code writing. In this subject you will be introduced to these skills through a wide variety of practical exercises.As the subject progresses, you will develop an understanding of how these practical skills help build towards an integrated plan. At the end of the subject, you will understand how graphical communication, data analysis, site investigation, and built form analysis contribute to planning work.

Introduction to Plan Making

Students will focus on developing their knowledge, skills and practice in urban design and urban planning through a studio and design project. Using a series of practical case studies, urban strategic planning and design exercises and working in groups and individual modules, students take a leading role in developing plans and designs for urban settlements. Attention in the subject is given to establishing projects that deliver net community benefit.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling.

Urban Design Project

In this subject you will develop a comprehensive understanding of natural environmental considerations when planning for regional scale projects. You will undertake planning studio work which will illustrate planning as a process of broader policy framing with a special focus on the spatial manifestation of environmental features and how they relate to place/s. You will grapple with key environmental challenges and address them through statutory and strategic planning perspectives. Topics covered include natural resources, watersheds and catchments.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling.

Planning for Environmental Sustainability

This subject focuses on learning research methods to solve real problems. You will come to understand how to design research, define an argument in response to the problems, use scholarly databases, consider ethical issues in data collection, generate field data, analyse and present these data, interpret results, and reflect on all these processes and their application to, for example, policy and professional contexts. The subject is a professional pathway in Masters programs in geography, planning, and spatial sciences.

Professional Research Methods

Building on the foundational concepts introduced in semester 1, you will engage in a series of practicums, a site visit and a simple planning project to gain an introduction to plan making processes and learn how they connect with our physical environments. This subject is designed to connect theory to practice, and in doing so, reveal your questions about how, why and what it means to plan well, so you can apply an analytical approach and critical questioning in your later years of study.

Introducing Plan Making

In this subject you will be introduced to the theory, concepts and practice of planning and urban design as an historical development across the world and with a particular focus on historical and contemporary Australia. These developments are studied in the context of progressive planning and architectural movements such as the city beautiful and garden suburb movements and the rise of new urbanism as a design reaction to post WWII suburbs. You will access the role and function of community-based movements on planning and design against the development of legislation and government policy seeking to promote good design. Using case studies, fieldwork and practical work, you will develop skills assessing the key elements of cities and understanding key elements of design.

Exploring Living Environments
