This subject was previously known as BLW22.Studying this subject will introduce you to the Australian Taxation System and get you to critically consider the various aspects of the taxation legislation with a focus on Income Tax, Fringe Benefit Tax, Goods and Services Tax and Capital Gains Tax as well as a detailed investigation into the taxing of various tax entities used in Australia. You will be exposed to considering the global aspect of taxation and how foreign companies and individuals are treated for tax purposes in Australia. Being a tax professional is a privileged position but it comes with both social and ethical responsibilities and in this unit we will identify these as well as taking a detailed looked at the various bodies associated with the administration and review of the Australian Taxation System such as the Australia Taxation Office, Inspector General of Taxation and the Tax Practitioners Board. Jump inside the Australian tax system and get to know the legislation. Study up on capital gains tax, income tax and goods and services tax. Work out the taxable income for a company. Develop an understanding of how partnerships and trusts work.

This subject will focus on the tax administration of the Australian taxation system. The subject is designed to introduce students to the way in which the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) administers income tax legislation and associated legislation such as the Taxation Administration Act.

Fundamentals of Tax Administration

This subject explores the goods and services tax, the fringe benefits tax and other indirect taxes. Learn how salary packaging and pay-roll taxes work. Practice writing up business activity statements and general payment summaries.Table the responsibilities and complications presented by the fringe benefits and goods and service taxes.

In this subject students will examine diverse disputes and conflicts that arise in the taxation context. They will learn resolution methodologies, ranging from objection processes with the Australian Taxation Office to administrative and judicial proceedings in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Federal Court and the High Court of Australia. Taxation Dispute Resolution

*** There are enrolment restrictions which the Curtin Law School have to approve. Students will need to contact <a href="https://students.connect.curtin.edu.au/app/ask" target="_blank" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Curtin Connect</a> requesting permission to enrol in CUR-TAXA6005 Graduate Taxation Study Tour. ***This is a national study tour and allows students to follow the taxation cycle within the Australia taxation system. Over a 10 day period students will visit a Canberra and Sydney and will visit a number of organisations including government agencies such as the ATO, Treasury, Tax Practitioners Board, as well as various professional organisations. The aim of the study tour is that students will immerse themselves in learning to understand and appreciate the roles of everyone involved in the smooth running of the Australian Taxation System. Graduate Taxation Study Tour

This subject was previously known as Advanced International Taxation Research.This subject is a research based subject that examines and critiques current issues in international tax at an advanced level.
