You’ll learn how to analyse and communicate complex information as you explore different security approaches, policies and priorities across the world.The Bachelor of Global Security provides understandings of contemporary challenges to security, including terrorism, political violence, transnational crime, global poverty, climate change and environmental stress, and analyses their political, historical and social context. Graduates will have the skills to respond to such challenges in the short-term, and develop robust solutions. Technological capacity is increasingly a defining feature of security capability, whether at the national or international level. In recent years, security cooperation between states has involved non-state actors with technical expertise, products, and solutions.  This subject provides students with a foundation to approach questions about technology in security: How does technology promise to solve key concerns for security and sovereignty? How do technologies shape security interests, definitions, or objectives? Security and Technology

Spying has long been a mainstay of wars and international diplomacy. This subjectexamines the development of modern intelligence gathering by exploring a range of historical events in which espionage played an important role; the evolution of signals intelligence and code-breaking; the role of special operations, covert actions and state-sponsored assassinations; the motivations and impact of spies and traitors within intelligence organisations, particularly during the Cold War; the expansion of surveillance during and beyond the War on Terror; and the broader legal, political and ethical issues that are raised when spying becomes a normalised part of international statecraft.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. The Modern History of Intelligence, Counter-Intelligence and Spies

Security has traditionally been associated with the integrity of the state and its protection by military means. Since the end of the Cold War, however, international war and state survival seem less severe threats to security as compared to a range of new and evolving security challenges. The latter include climate change, pandemics, inequality and economic underdevelopment, and irregular migration, among others. This has given rise to debates about whether security is a problematic social construct. Whom it should be for and how, and it should focus primarily on the well-being of individuals (human security)?This unit provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the history of security and conceptual debates about the term. 21st Century Security Challenges

Internship

This subject was previously known as POL291 International Security Studies.
This subject defines international security broadly to incorporate political, societal, military, environmental, economic and technological factors. After examining the competing theories of international politics and different conceptions of security, the focus shifts to the post-Cold War international system and especially the roles of the Subjected Nations and international law in international security. It utilises case studies from various regions to explain the changing dimensions of security.

Understand international politics, and security and strategic studies. Examine competing theories and different conceptions of security, the post-Cold War system, the roles of the United Nations and international law in international security. 

International Security Studies

This subject was previously known as PTR293 Terrorism in a Globalised World.This subject provides a critical introduction to the drivers, causes and various understandings of terrorism, violent extremism and processes of radicalisation. It considers different approaches to counter-terrorism, counter-violent extremism and de-radicalisation in theory and practice within the context of a globalised world. It examines the roles of ideology, identity, technology and economic, social and political conditions in giving rise to radicalisation in to violent extremism. Attention will be given to contemporary and historical case studies case studies of religious, political, issued and identity based violent extremism, together with national and transnational counter-violence extremism efforts.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Understand terrorism and counter-terrorism politics and policy. Draw on contemporary and historical case studies to consider the relationships between forces of globalisation, political interest, ideology and violence.

Violent Extremism and Radicalisation

NOTE: If you study this subject in Winter, the subject will be a shorter duration (5 weeks) and will require at least 20 hours of study per week.This subject was previously known as PTR100 Perspectives on Security and Terrorism.This unit introduces the concepts of security, risk, terrorism and counterterrorism and examines how various agents in international society perceive and employ them. It explains how and why terrorism undermines security and what measures are often taken to counter it. The unit also analyses the relationships between terrorism and religion, the media, and democracy. Perspectives on Security and Terrorism

This subject was previously known as POL213 Politics and Security in Southeast Asia: Terrorists, Gangsters and the State.This subject examines the historical context and interrelationships of a broad range of non-traditional and human security issues in contemporary Southeast Asia. The subject adopts a critical comparative approach addressing topics such as civil conflict, the direction of political regimes, environmental and resource security, poverty and inequality and health security. Politics and Human Security in South-East Asia

This subject was previously known as POL237 Terrorism and Political Violence in South Asia.This subject aims to develop a critical understanding of the nature of political and security challenges confronting the South Asian region and how these challenges impact upon global security; the relationship between politics, security and terrorism in South Asia; the appropriate counter-terrorism measures that have been taken by affected states; and the &#39;out-of-the-box&#39; solutions to security problems confronting South Asia. While a regional perspective will be adopted, the unit will place particular emphasis on India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.Murdoch University students should note that POL218 Politics and Security in South Asia is considered academically equivalent and therefore you should not enrol in this subject if you have successfully completed POL218.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Terrorism and Political Violence in South Asia

This unit covers key issues in Middle East politics and security today. The first part addresses regional complexities in terms of people, society, politics and geopolitics. The second part examines nationalism; the emergence of the modern states; the origins of conflict; and debates around political change and reform, including the role of political Islam and the emergence of religious radicalism.
