This course is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Western Australia. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. The course provides a grounding in theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and offers 45 days of professional experience in schools. Students who complete the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Education in Secondary are able to articulate into the Master of Teaching program.The Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in Secondary schools in Years 7 - 12. Students in this course will specialise in either one Secondary school curriculum areas, depending on their previous study, and will be qualified to teach in those subject areas of the Secondary curriculum. Curriculum areas offered in the Graduate Diploma in Education Secondary Education Major are: English, The Arts, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and Health and Physical Education. This course is not suitable for qualified Secondary teachers wishing to change their subject specialisation.

Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary Education)

The Graduate Diploma of Mathematics Education provides a pathway for secondary teachers to retrain in the area of Mathematics. The program includes the four courses contained in the Graduate Certificate (including linear algebra and calculus) in Mathematics along with two advanced mathematics content courses, a mathematics teaching methods course and a Core curriculum course. As part of a nested sequence of programs, these additional courses are also the foundation for the Master of Mathematics Education.

This subject examines literacy and numeracy as a dynamic, evolving, social, and cultural construct. It focuses on identifying and understanding the literacy and numeracy demands and conventions in all learning areas, predominantly in subjects other than English and Mathematics. Teaching Methods in Mathematics is a course designed to teach teachers how to master the skills of planning, teaching, and assessing units of work in Mathematics from the Year 7 to 12 Mathematics syllabus from the NSW Board of Studies. Teachers will gain a deep understanding of pedagogical practices and develop advanced pedagogical skills in assessment design and the capacity to integrate theory and practice in pedagogy and curriculum. There is a specific focus on teaching methods for stages 4, 5 and 6 Mathematics. The course also provides professional experience for the teachers to apply the pedagogical methods and practices in classroom settings to teach Mathematics at these stages at high school. The course also addresses the Graduate Teacher Standards of Elements prescribed by the NSW Institute of Teachers. This course is an essential part of the Master of Mathematics Education degree and is specifically designed in consultation with education providers to meet the needs of teacher training.

Teaching Methods in Mathematics

Advanced Calculus is designed to instruct students in areas of modern calculus and its applications to real world phenomena. The subject covers differential equations, modelling, series, multivariable functions, integration and partial differential equations. It is designed to further students’ mathematical content knowledge as well as their skills in communicating complex mathematical knowledge and ideas.

This course examines the guiding principles of middle schooling and the ways that student learning can be enhanced through a consideration of practices, processes, strategies and structures that best accommodate the needs of early adolescents. Students will examine the specific learning needs of early adolescents, early adolescent brain research and how this influences the pedagogy in middle school classrooms. Underpinning the course will be theme of “middle schooling” as a culture rather than a structure. Students will also explore how to lead pedagogical change in the middle years To this end, the course will conclude with participants engaging in an audit of their own schools to determine the extent to which middle schooling practices are evident and then recommend appropriate changes.

Teaching and Leading in the Middle Years of Schooling

Student disengagement is a multifaceted and often complex problem facing both teachers and educational administrators. This subject focuses on the theories behind student disengagement and takes a solution focused approach towards re-engagement practices. By the end of this subject, you will have developed a comprehensive understanding of the risk factors that lead to student disengagement, the consequences of disengagement and early school leaving, and the use of data for identification and intervention. You will have developed specialised knowledge on how to apply a range of evidence-based positive strategies at the individual, group and school level.

Re-engaging Disengaged Students

This subject introduces fundamental concepts in educational research, and explores how research can guide improvement of teaching and curriculum. Approaches to data collection, analysis, interpretation and communication are examined, and processes for ensuring research is valid, reliable, and ethical are reviewed. The subject explores strategies for incorporating research processes into plans for the enhancement of teaching practice and educational leadership.
