Why do some problems come to the attention of governments while others do not? Who is involved in the policy-making process? Pressure groups, media, think tanks; what are their goals? How are policies evaluated? Theoretical explanations are combined with practical examples from Australia and overseas to provide students with a critical understanding of how policy is made. The subject also equips students with the main conceptual tools for analysing the impact of a policy or policy recommendation.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Public Policy Analysis

This capstone course acts as the arch at the apex of the Politics and Public Policy major within the Bachelor of Government and International Relations, and associated degrees in which this major is offered. It draws together the knowledge students have gained from previous courses and also looks forward to the workplace. It will focus on both by considering theoretical approaches to problems and their practical solutions. Students will be expected to relate various issues to one another and to understand the implications of different policy approaches. The course will build on and further develop skills which will be useful in the workplace. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 3001GIR Solving Policy Problems at Griffith University.

Solving Policy Problems

KSA101 will provide a background to the science and management of the seas with focus on Antarctic and Southern Ocean. On the completion of this subject, students will demonstrate a knowledge and comprehension of the contemporary issues facing Antarctic, marine and coastal environments, and the management strategies used to optimise the value (market and non-market) of these areas.

This subject provides an introduction to the fundamentals of political science. It introduces students to some of the central ideas, concepts, actors, institutions and processes which characterise politics in democratic nations. It uses examples and case studies from Australia and across the democratic world to highlight the challenges confronting advanced democracies in the 21st Century.

This subject was previously known as SOCX830 Doing Social Survey Research.This is a unit in applied survey research and data analysis. It will explain key survey techniques used and give you the chance to try them out in practice. The unit covers choosing survey methods, administering surveys and writing good survey questions. It also looks at some of the debates around the potentials and limits of surveys. Qualitative researchers often rely on surveys to prepare themselves for fieldwork or to &#39;triangulate&#39; their results from interview work. But ultimately, surveys are designed to enable statistical analysis of data, and therefore the unit covers some of the statistical techniques used. Understanding how quantitative analytical methods work with and augment qualitative methods requires some knowledge and use of statistics and a statistical package.

Doing Social Survey Research

In this subject you will undertake research into current economic issues and apply economic concepts and frameworks to critically analyse problems and suggest appropriate public policy responses to them. You will learn how the forces of demand and supply coordinate the behaviour of individuals and businesses in the market and how government policy settings affect those market outcomes. You will study the decisions that businesses make in determining how much to produce and at what cost and analyse how the market structure and public policy settings affects firms’ choices. From an economy-wide perspective, you will investigate how to measure economic activity, inflation and unemployment, and you will examine the factors that influence these variables and the impacts on individuals, businesses and governments.

Advance your knowledge of how public policy affects public health. Explore the public policy development process consisting of steps such as agenda setting, policy formulation, and evaluation. In this subject you will examine Australian social and public policy via concepts of the Australian Settlement, the Welfare State, and Neoliberalism. You will use contemporary case studies to examine how ideology shapes government policy decisions and outcomes. You will also examine the policy context from the perspective of policy actors. You will reflect on major developments in Australian social policy in comparison with overseas trends, with an aim toward analysing the major socio-economic policy issues in both an Australian and international context.
