With the global population ageing at an unprecedented rate, the incidence and economic burden of falls are expected to rise, underscoring the need for proactive and evidence-based prevention strategies. The World Health Organization identifies falls as the outcome of complex interactions between biological, behavioural, environmental, and socioeconomic factors.This subject explores the complexities of ageing and the importance of maintaining function and independence to extend health span—the period of life spent in good health. Students will develop the knowledge and skills to assess, manage, and prevent falls through a comprehensive understanding of diverse communities, risk factors, active healthy ageing approaches, and population-level strategies. Emphasising the role of physical activity, environmental modification, and behaviour change, this subject equips students with practical and evidence-based interventions to support healthy ageing and enhance wellbeing in older adults.
