Healthcare delivery is constantly evolving in the face of population growth, our increasingly diverse and aging communities, changing approaches to delivering healthcare and availability of new technology. Health professionals need to be more collaborative, team-focussed and adaptable than ever before. To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers.The Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The program has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.You will build a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce. If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate, you may be eligible for advanced standing into the course to enable you to progress directly to the specialisation component of the degree.Advanced Practice specialisations are designed to develop graduates who can demonstrate leadership and perform independently in the healthcare system. Each specialisation provides the knowledge and skills for students to make evidence informed decisions in their chosen area to meet industry needs and workforce demands.The Communicable Disease Prevention specialisation aims to develop the professional competencies required for effective surveillance of and response to public health incidents in Australia, and globally. Communicable diseases present an ever-changing risk to society, especially considering the speed and scale of national and international travel and cannot be managed solely within a country or by individual states. Incompatible data systems, different laboratory testing and inconsistent legislation currently limitidentification and control of inter-state outbreaks and emerging national communicable disease issues. Delays in detection can hamper an effective response. The potential costs to health and the economy are considerable.More new and re-emerging communicable diseases are inevitable due to changing interactions between humans, the environment and organisms. Although inevitable, they are almost impossible to predict. It is essential to build capacity in surveillance, early assessment of potential threats and comprehensive response plans to minimise their acute and longer-term impacts. Globally and nationally countries are prioritising preparedness and need sufficient skilled human capital to respond to all threats – known and unknown. This subject explores how colonisation impacts the contemporary health situation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their access to and engagement with health services . Cultural safety, self-determination, collaboration and anti-racism are central concepts within this subject. You will have the opportunity to reflect upon your responses to racism personally and professionally critically and explore how one’s cultural positioning impacts health care delivery and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You will also engage in activities that strengthen self-awareness and reflection and which promote your capacity to demonstrate sensitivity and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures in the context of providing culturally safe health care. This subject will equip you to become a health professional who can advocate for approaches in health care practice, health service delivery, and population health initiatives that are anti-racist, culturally safe, and further self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Wellbeing

In this subject, you will be introduced to the issue of violence in society across the lifespan and how it can relate to you in your healthcare agency. Violence will be examined within international, national and local contexts, exploring the social and cultural components associated with violent behaviour and current and emerging approaches to violence prevention. You will be encouraged to engage with policies related to violence and to examine the complex issue of healthcare-related violence.

Violence and Health

This subject will equip students with an understanding of the research methods used in health disciplines in order to interpret published research, and design research of their own. The subject content includes the theoretical underpinning of both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and the links between the two. Students will learn how to search for and critically appraise published research in order to design future research projects, and make evidence-based decisions to improve practice in clinical settings. Through the course of the semester, students will engage in the skills required to produce a research proposal. These steps include formulating a research question, interrogating background literature, considering ethical requirements and selecting an appropriate research design.

Health Research Methods

This subject will introduce the principles of economic thinking, including core economic concepts and tools that assist healthcare policy decision-making. There will be a focus on exploring the evidence base, context and economic decisions that occur within the process of public policy development. Students will critically examine the complexities of the economic environment and influence of advocacy coalitions using contemporary policy case studies in the healthcare sector.

Health Policy, Economics and Advocacy

This subject offers an introduction to the fundamental concepts of biostatistics, providing a background in descriptive and analytical methods that are used to estimate associations between variables. This subject covers statistical theory, data entry and manipulation methods, data summarising, basic methods of association, and regression modelling. With the basic tools found within this course, students will be able to enter, manipulate, and check the validity of data, and use statistical software to analyse and interpret results. The analytical methods used here will form the foundation of research methods in epidemiology and health services research.

Introduction to Biostatistics

This subject focuses on the practical development of interventions and strategies to reduce the major risk factors for the major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart and lung diseases, cancers and diabetes, including tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and the harmful use of alcohol, and aligns with the World Health Organisations NCD agenda. Students will critically and systematically explore determinants of risk factors and disease outcomes, intervention options (including policy) and effectiveness evidence, health system and institutional capacity and responses at a national and global level.

Non Communicable Disease Prevention

Maintenance of food security and public health requires vigilance in the food supply chain based on knowledge of the physiology, ecology and epidemiology of food-borne pathogens including bacteria, viruses and parasites. This subject focuses on enhancing depth of knowledge of food-borne pathogens for Master of Applied Science students within the areas of Microbiology and Food Safety. Students will be provided content on advanced topics of microbial hazards in foods. This includes provision of reading content on specific sub-topics of food-related public health, food-borne pathogens, epidemiology and persistence of food-borne pathogens, and methods for routine sampling and detection. Knowledge gained will be supported and enriched by self-directed learning activities. These include recorded lectures, online quizzes, assessment and interpretation of research literature regarding microbial hazards in food, and a focused literature review on a topic of choice in this area.

Foodborne Pathogens

In this subject, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to respond to communicable disease outbreaks and other public health incidents. You will follow the ten steps of outbreak investigation using real-life outbreak examples and complete authentic assessment tasks that mirror those undertaken by public health professionals during outbreak investigations. This includes analysing public health intelligence and applying risk assessment frameworks to identify and confirm potential outbreaks, and integrating epidemiological, environmental, and laboratory evidence to determine the source of an outbreak and to guide control measures. You will also learn to apply risk communication principles to effectively engage with relevant stakeholders during outbreak investigations.

Outbreak Management

This subject provides essential background on the different types of surveillance systems used in public health, and the strengths and limitations of the data held within those systems. Students will learn the skills and knowledge required to perform descriptive analyses of surveillance data and to interpret surveillance data appropriately. Students will gain an understanding of the diverse objectives of surveillance systems and how the data collected is used to inform public health action and policy. Students will also learn established methods of evaluating surveillance systems to ensure they are fit for purpose.

Public Health Surveillance

Communicable Disease Epidemiology will explore communicable diseases of humans from an epidemiological perspective. It will provide an introductory overview of the basic biological knowledge needed to understand the interactions within and between populations of microbes, human and other animals. Students will learn to use epidemiological techniques to understand infectious disease surveillance data, disease transmission, and risk factors for infection. The subject will focus on how these methods are used in contemporary public health practice and applied in population-based strategies such as for sexually transmissible infections, blood borne viruses and enteric infections. The subject will introduce students to regional and global aspects of infectious diseases, particularly their social and ecological determinants, emergence and burden.
