In this subject, you will develop a broad understanding of health and wellbeing, examining key theories that underpin concepts in contemporary health and wellbeing. You will investigate the complex range of interactions that influence the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities and populations. As health is a dynamic concept, you will further examine the social, environmental and biomedical determinants of health and wellbeing within an Australian and global context.

Understanding Health And Wellbeing

This subject will allow you to develop an understanding of professional healthcare delivery in Australia. Areas of professional healthcare delivery that will be examined include; population health and prevention, general practice and community health; emergency health services and hospital care; mental health, rehabilitation and palliative care. You will review and analyse the overall health of Australia&#39;s population and investigate the diverse roles of a range of health professionals in the delivery of healthcare. You will develop critical reasoning skills through relevant case scenarios which introduce enquiry-based learning and teamwork. This subject will support the development of foundation academic skills and information literacy required for successful university study.This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for first-year undergraduate students.

Healthcare In Australia

In this subject, you are introduced to quantitative statistics, qualitative coding and the role of health data analytics in healthcare organisations and public health research. Key emphases include understanding the importance of healthcare data as an asset, identifying and applying the key elements of the data capture and analysis process in key research methodologies, along with effective presentation, communication and dissemination of findings beyond peer review publications. You will also investigate the role of health data analytics in quality and performance indicators. This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for first-year undergraduate students.

Introduction to Data Analytics in Healthcare

In this online, level two subject, students will acquire an understanding of the complexities surrounding drugs and drug use in contemporary Australia. The subject addresses: the classification and effects of licit and illicit substances; the development and nature of contemporary drug distribution networks; major approaches to regulating drugs and drug use; and the key debates and challenges involved in formulating policy and practice in this area. Specific topics we will explore include: alcohol and other drug consumption patterns among young people; pill testing debates; the rise of online illicit drug markets; drug court models; drug education; decriminalisation and legalisation efforts; ongoing tensions around how to regulate vaping; performance and image-enhancing drugs, and contemporary debates around harm reduction strategies (e.g. medically supervised injecting facilities). No pre-existing knowledge is required, but students will be urged to examine any assumptions or moral judgements they hold about the &#39;right&#39; way to approach the &#39;drug problem&#39;. A key theme in this subject is exploring how the framing of such problems - through various social, political, cultural, and economic lenses - shapes how we then respond to them, and that even well-intentioned policies can have unintended adverse outcomes.Please note this Winter Term subject is entirely asynchronous (meaning no live lectures or tutorials). Students must have completed a minimum of 60 credit points of Level 1 subjects to enrol.In 2024, this subject will commence on June 10 and the final assessment will likely be due around July 21. However, it is possible to submit this before the deadline and thus complete the subject slightly earlier.
