Healthcare delivery is constantly evolving in the face of population growth, our increasingly diverse and aging communities, changing approaches to delivering healthcare and availability of new technology. Health professionals need to be more collaborative, team-focussed and adaptable than ever before. To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers.The Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The program has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.You will build a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce. If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate, you may be eligible for advanced standing into the course to enable you to progress directly to the specialisation component of the degree.Advanced Practice specialisations are designed to develop graduates who can demonstrate leadership and perform independently in the healthcare system. Each specialisation provides the knowledge and skills for students to make evidence informed decisions in their chosen area to meet industry needs and workforce demands.The Communicable Disease Prevention specialisation aims to develop the professional competencies required for effective surveillance of and response to public health incidents in Australia, and globally. Communicable diseases present an ever-changing risk to society, especially considering the speed and scale of national and international travel and cannot be managed solely within a country or by individual states. Incompatible data systems, different laboratory testing and inconsistent legislation currently limitidentification and control of inter-state outbreaks and emerging national communicable disease issues. Delays in detection can hamper an effective response. The potential costs to health and the economy are considerable.More new and re-emerging communicable diseases are inevitable due to changing interactions between humans, the environment and organisms. Although inevitable, they are almost impossible to predict. It is essential to build capacity in surveillance, early assessment of potential threats and comprehensive response plans to minimise their acute and longer-term impacts. Maintenance of food security and public health requires vigilance in the food supply chain based on knowledge of the physiology, ecology and epidemiology of food-borne pathogens including bacteria, viruses and parasites. This subject focuses on enhancing depth of knowledge of food-borne pathogens for Master of Applied Science students within the areas of Microbiology and Food Safety. Students will be provided content on advanced topics of microbial hazards in foods. This includes provision of reading content on specific sub-topics of food-related public health, food-borne pathogens, epidemiology and persistence of food-borne pathogens, and methods for routine sampling and detection. Knowledge gained will be supported and enriched by self-directed learning activities. These include recorded lectures, online quizzes, assessment and interpretation of research literature regarding microbial hazards in food, and a focused literature review on a topic of choice in this area.

Foodborne Pathogens

This subject investigates the components of a healthy and sustainable food system (production to consumption) from a multidisciplinary perspective, focusing on the domains of health, environment, economy and society. Students will critically analyse the concept of the ‘Sustainable Diet’ and the changes needed to ensure that our food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable. Students will be exposed to the views of the food industry, food producers and public health experts on food sustainability and will reflect on the implication their own food choices and their impact on the environment. This subject combines case-study and experience-based learning and exposes students to current and emerging trends and issues, equipping them with the essential knowledge and skills to improve our food system. The driving forces behind this subject is our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, the challenge of an increasing world population combined with increasing food insecurity, the rise of nutrition-related chronic diseases and the bi-directional relationship environmental change and the changes needed to ensure that the food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable.

Food, Health and Environment

Food safety comprises a broad range of scientific endeavours that are important in human society. Maintenance of food security and public health requires vigilance in the food supply, including safety, traceability, epidemiology and the ecology of food-borne pathogens. The science also involves the application of knowledge related to food fermentation, processing techniques, manufacturing, and even packaging. Finally, innovations in food manufacturing and the provision of health benefits is a rapidly growing area including functional foods, prebiotics, and probiotics for human and animal consumption. A substantial proportion of food safety risks are biological and are associated with microbial pathogens and microbial-produced toxins.

This subject will explore strategies to strengthen the capacity of individuals, families and groups to actively participate, contribute and engage in the health and wellbeing of their communities. This subject will build the knowledge and skills needed to coordinate services, projects and activities that result in improved health and wellbeing and increased &#39;social capital&#39;. Evidence-based models of community development, citizen engagement and participation, health promotion, peer support, networking and activism will be explored and applied through real-world case studies. Particular emphasis will be placed on mitigating the risks and barriers that contribute to poorer health and wellbeing outcomes for vulnerable, marginalised and isolated population groups.

This subject will introduce you to the way in which health and community services are organised, integrated, funded and governed in Australia. This subject is contextualised to reforms in Australia&#39;s health and community services system, emphasising a shift in focus from institutional to community settings, from sick-care to wellness and prevention, and from system-led to consumer-directed approaches. You will explore current trends, changes and challenges in health and community services, including regulation, resources and the impact of technology. At both a system and organisational level, you will be introduced to service planning and distribution, resource allocation, consumer access, and service coordination.

This subject was previously known as &quot;Applying Health and Wellbeing in Practice&quot;.In this subject, you will be introduced to the principles of primary health, preventative health and health promotion and how they inform the design and delivery of support. You will develop an understanding of case management, care coordination, service navigation and the strategies, methods, frameworks, tools and domains of action used to engage with and advocate for individuals and diverse groups. Skills in research, communication, planning and evaluation will be developed to support your ability to mitigate challenges, and to co-design, interpret and deliver evidence-based plans for promoting health and wellbeing.

This subject provides essential background to professionals working in local, state and national settings for effective outbreak response. Students will learn the skills and knowledge required to respond to communicable disease outbreaks and other public health incidents. This includes: the ten steps of outbreak investigations; assessment of public health surveillance data and intelligence; using risk assessment frameworks; applying appropriate epidemiological findings and evidence; risk communication principles; and appropriate interventions to control outbreaks. This subject is relevant to people working within local, state or national government, hospital staff, residential care staff, non-government agencies, and emergency response workers. Local examples will be used to teach concepts, and students will be able to draw on their own experiences and their role in their own workplace during the workshop and when completing assessment tasks.

Outbreak Management

This subject provides essential background on the different types of surveillance systems used in public health, and the strengths and limitations of the data held within those systems. Students will learn the skills and knowledge required to perform descriptive analyses of surveillance data and to interpret surveillance data appropriately. Students will gain an understanding of the diverse objectives of surveillance systems and how the data collected is used to inform public health action and policy. Students will also learn established methods of evaluating surveillance systems to ensure they are fit for purpose.

Public Health Surveillance

Communicable Disease Epidemiology will explore communicable diseases of humans from an epidemiological perspective. It will provide an introductory overview of the basic biological knowledge needed to understand the interactions within and between populations of microbes, human and other animals. Students will learn to use epidemiological techniques to understand infectious disease surveillance data, disease transmission, and risk factors for infection. The subject will focus on how these methods are used in contemporary public health practice and applied in population-based strategies such as for sexually transmissible infections, blood borne viruses and enteric infections. The subject will introduce students to regional and global aspects of infectious diseases, particularly their social and ecological determinants, emergence and burden.

Communicable Disease Epidemiology

Evaluation is a core function of public health and health system leadership. It provides evidence to improve the design, delivery, reach and impact of health interventions in the many different contexts of the health system. This subject develops student competencies in health intervention evaluation, including stakeholder consultation, evaluation design and planning, needs assessment, logic modelling, evaluability assessment and relevant conceptual frameworks relevant to evaluation in public health and health system practice and leadership. This is underpinned by exploration of the different evaluation approaches and designs and the research and evaluation methods used in evaluation practice.
