In this subject, you will focus on the scope, aims and techniques of sport and exercise psychology. The scope of sport psychology includes: its importance in changing community health behaviours; working with special groups such as disabled persons, elite athletes, and non-sport performers (for example, dancers), older populations, and individuals undergoing rehabilitation. The aim of sport psychology should not be limited to winning, but should be oriented to achieving personal goals, whether they be improving performance, fitness and health, or simply increasing enjoyment. Techniques include the use of cognitive-behavioural techniques to increase motivation, reduce competition anxiety, improve concentration, enhance teamwork, and manage stressors outside of the sport area (for example, work, study, family).This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your third- year.

Sport and Exercise Psychology

In this subject, you will examine chronic conditions with emphasis on issues pertaining to the management of these conditions at a community level. There will be a concentration on theories and constructs relevant to healthy self management and effective social support for those living with chronic conditions. The content of the subject includes a presentation of the World Health Organization&#39;s classification systems relevant to disability (ICIDH - The International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps, ICF - International Classification of Functioning) and an illustration of the application of this framework to chronic illness conditions across the life-span. This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second or third year.

Living with Chronic Conditions

In this subject, you will develop the core knowledge for enhancing wellbeing and promoting flourishing in group settings. Through exposure to evidence-based literature on topics such as positive emotions, mindfulness, autonomy support, motivation and resilience you will learn how to create positive environments for individuals, teams and organisations. You will also learn the counselling and communication skills required to promote wellbeing and flourishing within these environments. Specifically, you will learn how to work with groups and deliver core counselling skills and strategies within a motivational interviewing and acceptance and commitment therapy framework.  This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second or third year.

Positive Wellbeing and Counselling for Groups

Approximately one-third of all individuals reporting somatic complaints also have anxiety disorder and / or depression. Thus, many people presenting to health practitioners will also have mental health conditions. One aim of this subject is for you to be able to identify mental health conditions, and some core principles of working with people with such conditions. People presenting for assistance in rehabilitation settings also frequently present in a state of distress - for instance, persistent pain, anger, anxiety, and shame - which can have a substantial impact on how well such people progress. It&#39;s therefore important for you to have a thorough knowledge of these states, how they can impact on a person&#39;s behaviour, and core principles of working with people in such states. As well, you will be asked to apply these principles in analysing how to tailor your approach when working with people with these conditions. This subject is designed for second-year students. Mental Health and Rehabilitation

This subject will explore the influence of culture on both individuals and communities. You will develop the skills to analyse cultural impacts on thoughts, emotions, and behavioural processes though lectures on cultural psychology and tutorial exercises. This subject will also explore how to build culturally diverse yet cohesive communities by creatively applying the knowledge of cultural psychology, social psychology, and community psychology. Tutorial exercises will provide you with opportunities to explore how to put the basic knowledge into practice when considering issues concerning cultural diversity in communities. Global Citizenship entails deep appreciation of how we live in an interconnected world being able to recognise the global context of concepts, act across cultures and boundaries, and work with diverse communities - now and in the future. This subject consists of timetabled lectures and tutorial classes. It is typically taken by students in their second or third year.

Psychology of Culture, Communities and Global Citizenship

This subject explores the features of child language and how children acquire language. From before birth, to infancy, early schooling years and beyond, this subject examines the development of language and also the cognitive processes behind language acquisition. This subject includes the study of children who learn more than one language, and children with both typical and atypical language development. This subject is a useful introduction to the topic for anyone who has children in their lives and/or is planning to work with children.

This subject delves into the scientific study of human behaviour in relation to cyber security, with a particular focus on psychological, sociological, anthropological, financial and economic considerations. Key theories covered include motivation, cognition, emotion, and personality traits that influence victim vulnerability and hacker success. Additionally, the subject examines cybercrime business models, criminological theories, and the impact of organisational culture, leadership, and communication on cyber security practices. Students will analyse the economic and financial implications of investing in human factors in cyber security and propose cost-effective risk management strategies. Through the development of a comprehensive cyber security culture, education, and engagement strategy, students will apply professional skills in evaluative judgment, team building, negotiation, and high-level communication skills.

This subject serves as an introduction to the biological bases of behaviour. Nerve cells are the basic building blocks of the brain. Therefore their functioning and methods of communicating form the basic principles of brain and nervous system functioning. Hence this subject includes introductory lectures on the elements of the nervous system that contribute to the conscious and unconscious aspects of behaviour. There is an emphasis on understanding how the cells of the nervous system function and communicate with each other, thus allowing us to explain how sensory information, drugs, and hormonal changes influence behaviour, as well as how behaviour influences the brain.

In this subject you will be introduced to key areas of psychology with a socio-cultural perspective. People share knowledge with others in society. The shared knowledge (i.e., culture) gives meanings to people’s lives as well as influencing their everyday behaviour, the sense of who they are, their personal relationships and psychological wellbeing. We will discuss psychology of individuals in diverse contexts to understand how personal experiences, including emotions, motivation, intimacy with others and health behaviours are shaped by cultural understanding and social expectations in those contexts.
