The Bachelor of Education (Primary) has been designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Specifically, this degree provides a qualification for those intending to teach children at the primary level of education.Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of children. This subject was previously known as Pedagogies and Planning for Mathematics.This subject focuses on the development of a range of effective pedagogies with particular emphasis on the Proficiency Strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics and with consideration of integrated curriculum principles. Students will continue to develop a deep understanding of the Number and Algebra strand of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. Topics include effective teaching and assessment of primary mathematics, and planning, with a focus on the ‘big ideas’ of mathematics. Curriculum content focuses on understanding operations and computational choices, with consideration given to the factors that have an impact on children’s ability to make effective decisions about computations. Mathematics Pedagogies and Integrated Curriculum

This subject begins by identifying key issues in English and engages a critical analysis of theories, pedagogies and philosophies associated with the teaching of language, literacy and literature. Individual students will select a key issue and conduct an investigation of relevant theories, pedagogies and philosophy. Individual investigations will be followed by collaborative discussion of findings with peers investigating the same issue, followed by critical analysis of thinking around the issue, culminating in the presentation of conclusions and recommendations for future practice/further research.

The Literacy Researcher

This subject was previously known as EDP263 Visual and Media Arts Education
Planning and pedagogy of authentic forms of arts education are addressed through the curriculum subjects of Media and Visual Arts. The school curriculum provides the framework for planning sequential, inquiry-based and engaging learning opportunities for primary school children. Experiential learning opportunities and reflective practices facilitate the development of practical understanding of the scope and nature of arts learning across the primary school years. Personal media and visual arts literacy are promoted as the foundation for teaching within a lifelong learning framework. Pedagogical understandings and practices that support the development of children’s identities and agency through their creativity, self-expression, meaning-making and communication of ideas are studied, practiced with children, and reviewed using an improvement cycle framework.

Visual and Media Arts Education

This subject was previously known as Inquiry in the Humanities Classroom.
This subject introduces each of the HASS discipline areas and the pedagogy and theory – including inquiry learning and curriculum integration – which can assist students to develop teaching, learning and assessment strategies for HASS in the Primary classroom. Students will explore the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that enable children to become active and informed citizens as they connect with their local and global communities. Students will reflect on the role of the educator as a global citizen. Through the thematic of contested histories, they will explore how difference – cultural and otherwise – is valued and respected in the HASS classroom; and how that can empower children from diverse backgrounds, while laying the basis for sustainable communities.

Inquiry in the Humanities and Social Sciences Classroom

Participants will continue to develop a social constructivist approach to teaching and learning mathematics, based on social cultural theories and their application to learning environments. There is an emphasis on the deep understanding of the Geometry and Measurement strand and the Statistics and Probability strand of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. There is continued development of teachers&#39; mathematical content knowledge with particular reference to knowledge of spatial and measurement concepts for effective teaching, as well as those related to data handling, statistics and probability. Development of pedagogical content knowledge is centred on the investigation of appropriate use of a wide range of technologies and manipulatives and their application to learning and teaching. Inquiry in the Mathematics Classroom

This subject was previously known as Pedagogies and Planning for English.
This subject introduces key theories behind English literacy pedagogies for teaching, assessment, feedback and reporting for middle and upper years of primary school. Students will use data to create integrated plans across key primary curriculum which demonstrates their knowledge of content and effective instructional approaches for diverse groups of learners. Planning will also take into account students with additional needs and offer extension to gifted and talented students.

English Pedagogies and the Integrated Curriculum

This is the third in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in a school). This subject focuses on assessing, providing feedback and reporting on student learning. It encompasses the principles and purpose of effective assessment through the analysis and critique of different learning theories. The professional experience practical assessment is a 4 week full-time block placement intended to enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained along with providing further insights into the complexity of the teacher’s role. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, and all other professional experience requirements met. Primary Professional Experience 3: Evaluating Learning

This subject examines social, cultural, linguistic, and economic forces which impact on classroom practices and student learning outcomes. The subject requires analysis of the characteristics of classrooms and schools that reduce the effects of inequalities through curriculum choices and pedagogical practices. This subject emphasises the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers associated with student linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic diversity including consideration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in primary school classrooms.

Cultural Contexts in Primary Education

What does it look like, feel like and smell like? In this subject the inquiry process provides the framework through which students investigate science in the primary classroom. Students will create and participate in inquiry focused hands-on activities across the science learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. This subject will focus on fostering a positive and engaging environment to promote students’ scientific literacy and will consider lesson planning, teaching strategies and assessment forms in the context of the science classroom. The subject will also evaluate the raft of science resources and technologies available for primary classrooms. There is a focus on promoting students’ ability to develop primary school learners’ knowledge and skills to work scientifically, and to foster a positive attitude to science, and apply science knowledge to better understand the world around them.

Inquiry in the Science Classroom

This subject was previously known as EDP383 Health and Physical Education.
This subject introduces students to health and physical education in the contemporary Australian primary school curriculum, where emphasis is on developing children’s health and physical literacies within safe and lifelong learning frameworks so they are able to flourish as healthy and active citizens. With attention to diversity and social justice, children’s rights to develop health and physical literacies within their personal, physical and socio-cultural contexts are explored, and relevant teaching approaches identified. Given the emphasis on evidence-based curriculum design, students will investigate the research that underpins the contemporary curriculum rationale and focus.
This subject reviews ongoing, developmentally appropriate and explicit teaching about health and movement, where children participate safely to develop the knowledge, skills, dispositions and understandings to make healthy and active choices for the wellbeing of themselves and others. In this regard, the importance of physical skills in the early childhood years, including observation and practise of fundamental motor skills (FMS), assessment of FMS and appropriate interventions, is addressed. Advanced movement skills and strategies, components of personal, social and community health, fitness, spatial awareness and games-based teaching models are also explored.
