The Diploma of Pharmacy Studies is your stepping stone into the Bachelor of Pharmacy. This is the perfect choice if you have not met the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Pharmacy, or would like a more supported entry into University studies. Upon completion of this program, you will meet the maths and chemistry pre-requisites, as well as gaining additional skills to help you succeed at University.This program will prepare you for future study in the Bachelor of Pharmacy, or you can choose to enter the workforce with highly employable skills in roles such as pharmacy assistant or pharmacy technician.You’ll complete a mix of subjects needed to enter the Bachelor of Pharmacy, subjects to develop your study skills and disciplinary subjects taught by the School of Medicine. Fundamentals of Pharmacology

In this subject you will be introduced to foundational concepts of pharmacist roles and responsibilities within the context of ethical and safe professional practice within the Australian health care system. You will begin using core online pharmacy resources to introduce clinical and critical thinking skills. You will also learn about Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health status and culture. In addition, you will learn about health of other populations including culturally and linguistically diverse people and people from the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pharmacy in Health Care

Counselling and Advice on Medicines focusses on patient-centred care with patient counselling concepts and application of communication skills in clinical scenarios. This patient-centred care is extended to the study of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Principles of drug therapy such as adverse reactions, drug interactions, medication adherence, patient counselling are discussed and applied to simulated cases.

Sports doping is a truly international problem and has a significant impact on today&#39;s society; from cheating, to the politics and ethics of sophisticated doping programs, the enormous bureaucracy and cost of monitoring and prosecuting, along with the impact on an individual&#39;s mental and physical health. Students will recognise drug classes that can enhance athletic performance, and that both doping and detection technologies are constantly evolving, leading to a sports doping arms race between detection and doping which drives newer and ever more sophisticated methods of cheating. The subject begins with an overview of drug classes that are prohibited in sport, their mechanisms of action, effects on performance, and health effects. Students will then learn to appreciate the ethical and legal issues associated with sports doping detection, as well as an introduction into analytical testing methods and processes to ensure sample integrity. The subject incorporates online learning activities consisting of lectures and supportive contextual media, as well as experiential application of internet resources.

Pulling together the disciplines of sociology, law and complementary medicine, this subject is designed for students who want to understand, debate and critically analyse the use and place of complementary medicines in healthcare today. Learning modules include: understanding the use of complementary medicines in Australia, the question of evidence and the role of ethics and the law in regulating the availability, safety and advertising of complementary medicines. A particular focus is on the ecological and environmental issues that arise from increased use of these products.
