Healthcare delivery is constantly evolving in the face of population growth, our increasingly diverse and aging communities, changing approaches to delivering healthcare and availability of new technology. Health professionals need to be more collaborative, team-focussed and adaptable than ever before. To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers. The Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The course has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.The program will provide you with a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects, expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.Become a leader in Medication Safety.The Medication Safety specialisation is designed to develop the skills and knowledge to identify, prevent and manage medication-related harm and improve medication outcomes. Unsafe medication practices and medication errors are a leading cause of injury and avoidable harm in health care systems across the world. In 2020-21, 16.6 million Australians (65% of the population) received PBS prescriptions, and almost all of the population use medicines each year. In Tasmania ~15% of admissions to medical wards for patients 65 years and older are related to adverse drug reactions (ADRs); almost 90% of these are preventable through better medication management. This specialisation will help you to identify and analyse medication safety issues and provide you with the skills to design and implement solutions to reduce medication related harm in your health care setting.Once you have completed your specialisation you will select a research pathway of your choice.<ul><li>The Capstone Pathway will develop your research skills as you design and conduct a quality improvement project relevant to your workplace and/or career aspirations.</li><li>In the Research Pathway, you will complete a substantial piece of original, independent research, focussed on the topics that are of particular interest, that provides you with a pathway to a Higher Degree by Research.</li></ul>The Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) has been co-designed with major health providers for the health workforce, with content developed to meet the needs of health professionals from all disciplines. The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce.If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate (or higher) you may be eligible for advanced standing into the program.The Graduate Certificate in Advanced Practice and Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) also articulate directly into the Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation), providing you with a seamless pathway to progress your career in a meaningful new direction and advance practice in your health organisation. Fundamentals of Pharmacology

Evidence based Medication Safety Innovation will help you identify and analyse medication-safety issues encountered in a variety of clinical settings. You will initially learn about and appraise existing issues and interventions that attempt to improve the Quality Use of Medicines or address medication-safety issues. You will then devise innovative ideas to overcome these issues and develop evidence-based solutions that could be implemented in the real world.Particular emphasis is placed on the combined skills of practice-based mitigation of medication-safety risks, while using research skills and knowledge, to intervene in identified problematic areas in an evidence-based manner.

Evidence Based Medication Safety Innovation

This subject is a self-directed, fully on-line introductory subject, that uses patient cases to develop your research skills to make evidence-based decisions This subject introduces important concepts and develops skills in evidence-based medicine, asking and answering well-articulated clinical questions, and critical review of research literature. You will also develop evidence-based practice skills such as framing an answerable research question and search strategies for a patient&#39;s unique circumstances. You will use medical databases, and learn how to identify high-quality evidence. The skills developed in this subject will enhance independent clinical decision-making.

Evidence Based Pharmacotherapeutic Practice

The subject will provide you with advanced knowledge in the pharmacological management of diseases within the context of advanced practice. This will also include the areas of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, as they apply to the therapeutic management of conditions relevant to advanced practice. You will develop a sound understanding of the quality use of medicines, and some familiarity with Poisons and Therapeutics Goods Act and Regulations, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and medication management for advanced practitioners.

Advanced Pharmacology & Medication Management

In this subject you will be introduced to foundational concepts of pharmacist roles and responsibilities within the context of ethical and safe professional practice within the Australian health care system. You will begin using core online pharmacy resources to introduce clinical and critical thinking skills. You will also learn about Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health status and culture. In addition, you will learn about health of other populations including culturally and linguistically diverse people and people from the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pharmacy in Health Care

Counselling and Advice on Medicines focusses on patient-centred care with patient counselling concepts and application of communication skills in clinical scenarios. This patient-centred care is extended to the study of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Principles of drug therapy such as adverse reactions, drug interactions, medication adherence, patient counselling are discussed and applied to simulated cases.

Counselling and Advice on Medicines

This fully online subject provides you with the knowledge and skills to improve medication safety. The subject introduces you to medication-related problems, along with current practices to reduce these problems in Australian health care. It is contextualised to align with the Australian response to the global challenge of reducing medication-related harm. This subject equips you to play an important role within a model of collaborative interprofessional teamwork.
