It examines the way in which the criminal justice system (including police, court, and correctional staff) deals with individuals with mental disorders. In particular, the subject focuses on the identification and treatment of individuals with mental disorders; relevant processes and decision-making in different elements of the criminal justice system; examining contemporary approaches to definitions, diagnostic tools, notions of criminal responsibility and fitness to stand trial; and the use of psychological knowledge, theory, and research to guide reflective practice and build personal, professional resilience.

​A Trauma-Informed Approach​ to Resilience and Wellbeing

Approximately one-third of all individuals reporting somatic complaints also have anxiety disorder and / or depression. Thus, many people presenting to health practitioners will also have mental health conditions. One aim of this subject is for you to be able to identify mental health conditions, and some core principles of working with people with such conditions. People presenting for assistance in rehabilitation settings also frequently present in a state of distress - for instance, persistent pain, anger, anxiety, and shame - which can have a substantial impact on how well such people progress. It&#39;s therefore important for you to have a thorough knowledge of these states, how they can impact on a person&#39;s behaviour, and core principles of working with people in such states. As well, you will be asked to apply these principles in analysing how to tailor your approach when working with people with these conditions. This subject is designed for second-year students. In this online subject, you will learn about a range of approaches to managing stress and enhancing well-being which can be applied by individuals in a self-care context. As a foundation, you will learn about stress and coping, well-being and happiness, and motivation and behaviour change. This content includes different theories and models used in psychology to explain these concepts.Then you will explore the theory, scholarly evidence base, and practice of a range of self-care approaches, grouped into three themes:<ol><li>Lifestyle (healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, relaxation, social connections, and nature engagement)</li><li>Mindfulness (everyday/informal mindfulness, formal mindfulness and meditation, compassion and self-compassion) and</li><li>Positive Psychology (gratitude, acts of kindness, character strengths, meaning in life, flow and creativity). </li></ol>You will learn how to think critically regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the self-care approaches covered.Throughout the subject, there is a focus on understanding the mechanisms of action of these approaches (how they “work”). A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

Creative Arts, Play and Mental Wellbeing

TAS-CNA739 introduces you to psychological therapies used in mental health settings, either as stand-alone interventions or in combination with pharmacological interventions. You will have the opportunity to explore factors relevant to the experience of mental health, as well as a range of psychological interventions that can be implemented in therapeutic engagement with individuals in clinical and professional settings. You will be introduced to the core principles and skills of therapeutic modalities relevant to mental health care and addictions treatment, developing knowledge through a range of online learning activities.
