The aim of this subject is to apply critical perspectives to popular music as a key form of cultural production, consumption and leisure in contemporary everyday life. In doing so the unit will apply a range of sociological concepts and theories ranging from Marxism and cultural Marxism through to more recent post-structuralist approaches including postmodernism, reflexive modernity and risk. The unit will also draw on approaches applied to the study of popular music in corresponding disciplines such as cultural studies and media studies.

Understanding the media landscape that permeates our lives is crucial for any communication practitioner. This subject enables you to explore media relations strategies at an advanced level both in the critical context of mass media theory and as a practical management technique in various business, political and community settings. The course equips you with the skills necessary to function in a professional media relations role in an ever-changing environment. You will develop an understanding of the critical relationship between the public relations practitioner and the media, while gaining insights into the different needs and expectations of traditional and social media outlets and platforms.A range of assessments and tutorial activities will enable you to design media releases and a video story, create an online media centre, as well as understand the theories that support these communication approaches and skills. This subject provides an overview of the publishing industry, its role, personnel, strategies and products. The subject contextualises the history of the industry and its evolution as both a business and commercial enterprise. We will examine the often complex operations of this cultural industry from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Students will develop an understanding of: the history of the industry; contemporary issues facing publishing as a cultural industry; the professional expertise required to develop a text for publication; production and marketing processes; developments in electronic and non-traditional publishing.
