In this subject, you gain insights into how journalists define news and construct news stories; develop an understanding of how news stories and features are structured; explore the various genres of journalistic writing through practical exercises; and create a marketable piece of journalistic writing.

Why are we so fascinated by crime and deviance? What role does the media play in engaging people&#39;s fascination? To what extent can – and does – the media tap into and increase people&#39;s fears about crime? How does the media create subtle biases that inform our perceptions of crime? In addressing such questions, this unit brings together analysis from criminology, sociology, media studies and cultural studies to provide a critical understanding of the relationships that underpin our understanding of crime as a mediated phenomenon. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to the theoretical frameworks that help us understand media influence, examining, amongst other topics, the media&#39;s contrasting approach to children as victims and perpetrators of crime, the often misogynist portrayals of women who offend, the impact of social and mobile media in accelerating sensationalism of news reporting, the changing nature and impact of public surveillance culture as well as the news values that determine which crime events are considered worthy of media attention. Concerned with the ways in which crime is represented and &#39;manufactured&#39; through the media, students will be able to critically evaluate the production, representation and consumption of crime in the media, analysing how these processes, in turn, shape our perceptions of crime, risk and security.

Media, Representation and Crime

The media plays a fundamental role in shaping how society understands, and often fears, crime. In Media and Crime you will critically examine the complexities in how traditional and contemporary news and entertainment media reports on crime, harm and justice. In this subject, you will learn a diverse range of concepts related to media representation, including: news values and newsworthiness, performance crime, agenda setting, and the media’s role in shaping public perceptions and discourses about crime and justice. You will also learn about semiotics. The study of signs and symbols is a powerful tool used by the entertainment media to communicate complex ideas and narratives. Entertainment media, including films, TV shows, news broadcasts, and computer and console games often depict crime in ways that reflect and reinforce societal beliefs using semiotics. As consumers of media, it is important to develop critical media literacy skills so you can better analyse and question the messages you consume.

Media and Crime

This subject introduces students to solutions-oriented forms of journalism, Students will be encouraged to explore their practice beyond conventional journalism production to explore innovative and interactive storytelling techniques that utilise a suite of media tools to produce web-based journalism.

This subject introduces the global journalism landscape. It draws on the culturally appropriate professional practices of working in transnational spaces, introducing students to the skills required for producing global stories for local audiences, and local stories for global audiences.

Global Journalism: Reporting the World

Broadcast journalism covers news writing and production for radio, television and other digital platforms. It builds on the audio and visual production skills students were introduced to in the core course and applies them to a professional newsroom context.

This subject provides knowledge and skills in the development of professional social media and considers theory and practice to take advantage of the opportunities of social media while navigating the risks that come with the terrain.

Social Media for Global Communication

This subject is a basic introduction to digital media production, providing students with exposure to the theory and practice behind communicating with and through a variety of digital media formats including photography and web design.

Digital Media: Portfolio Production

Writing for Media introduces you to the practice of writing for various media platforms and audiences. The focus of the subject will be to teach you how to write a range of media texts and to develop skills in editing and honing your work. The key learning outcomes of writing concisely, effective revision, distilling information and sound knowledge of grammar and style are transferable across a range of vocations. You will develop a folio of written work.

Writing for Media

For at least 20 years, we have seen a trend towards &#39;convergence&#39; in the media, as new social understandings and new business models emerge that break down the distinction between traditional media forms (print and broadcast news, films and games and so on). We have also seen the development of social or participatory media, without rigid boundaries between consumers, creators and producers. The internet has played a critical role in these processes, becoming the key frame of reference for discussions of the future of converging and participatory media. In particular, the World Wide Web enables the production, distribution, remixing and remediation of an extraordinary array of digital media content and the linking together of otherwise separate media forms. In this subject, you will investigate why and how media are transforming in the era of convergence and participation, and then put these insights into practice by creating web-based media content.
