Public Relations: Theory and Practice

This subject was previously known as MHIX365 From the Beats to Big Brother: Popular Culture Since the 1950s.What can we learn about the past when we examine it through the lens of popular culture? This subject traces a history of popular culture in the United States of America and Australia from the 1950s to the present, exploring the ways that popular culture can magnify and reflect changing ideas about race, class, gender, and ideology. We will examine the impact of new technologies, moral panics over popular culture, and whether popular culture constituted a form of cultural citizenship. Film, television, music and other media are used in this unit to evoke seminal moments in the history of popular culture and students are encouraged to explore these non-discursive forms as primary sources. Students are also encouraged to consider the reception of popular culture by audiences and to think about their own experience of popular culture historically. This subject will be of particular interest to students in media, education, and cultural studies, as well as history.

Whether it’s a speech to an audience of thousands, a pitch presentation to a client, or a tea room farewell to an office colleague, at some stage in your career you will be required to stand in front of an audience and deliver a coherent speech. The way you present yourself to your audience affects the way they see you. If you are able to express your ideas confidently, you will be seen as a stronger leader, a proactive citizen, and a more valuable employee.In this subject you will be trained in effective, oral communication skills (in English), for public presentation in a variety of “real world” environments and online. You will develop skills in speech writing and analysis, vocal techniques and body language, and the use of appropriate presentation technologies.

Speaking in Public

The continual evolution of film and screen based media has created many opportunities for composers who are interested in writing scores to accompany visual material.Studying this subject will give you an introduction to composing music and sound for the screen. You will develop an understanding of the relationship between sound and moving image and will explore the creative process of the film composer.You will analyse seminal film scores and examine a range of stylistic approaches to screen composition. You will develop practical techniques in both traditional notation and scoring approaches, integrated with current technologies for creating and realising film music in a professional context.In this subject&#39;s major project you will compose original scores for a variety of given video/film segments.Note: Students require skills in DAW and notation software.

Screen Composition and Sound Design

This subject serves as an introduction to communicating with imagery. Students explore theories of visual communication as tools to develop their own visual language. They will gain skills in observation, idea generation, and effective visual communication in the context of photography and moving image. Students will also study the history and evolution of photography including the origins of moving image acknowledging the major influences and commentators of the industry.

This unit introduces students to the critical reading of diverse texts—fiction and non-fiction, poetry and prose, literary and non-literary forms. Students will explore and experiment with a range of writing practices and reflect on the contemporary ethical, practical, and imaginative challenges and possibilities of writing in an ever-evolving digital environment. You’ll learn how to evaluate sources, construct evidence-based arguments, and engage with debates about historical truth and storytelling.Through a mix of reflective writing, creative media work, and critical film review, you’ll develop both your academic and communication skills. Whether you&#39;re passionate about history, film, or both, this unit will challenge you to see the past—and the screen—in new ways.

Screening the Past: History on Film and Television

Genre fiction often features distinctive storyworlds ranging from gritty realism to the whimsically fantastical. This unit explores the ways in which genre helps writers explore complex themes and issues through the lens of these genre-driven worlds. Rather than viewing genre conventions as restrictive to the creative process, students will investigate how genre conventions can be utilised (and, in some cases, challenged or subverted) to help writers build exciting and immersive worlds. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with writing memorable characters, creating unique fictional worlds, and structuring engaging plots through a range of popular genres.
