The Master of Creative Writing is designed to extend and challenge emerging writers to hone their craft in a small community of writers. The focus is on developing your creativity and writing skills, and to provide expert training if you are aiming for professional publication. You are encouraged to experiment, hone your craft and to develop a technical vocabulary for critiquing your own work and the work of others. Specialist units in the degree engage with novel and short story writing, creative nonfiction (such as memoir, writing about place, personal essay), poetry, writing for young adults and manuscript development.

Master of Creative Writing

This is a course for students who are new to their chosen major area of study. It is designed to allow students to develop and apply advanced skills and understandings of contemporary practices in their field while developing and extending their critical, analytical, and creative knowledges and experiences through interdisciplinary engagement with allied fields of media, creative arts, and social inquiry. Students will develop specialist practical and professional skills orientated towards professional or creative engagement in fields of their chosen major. They will also gain analytical, collaborative, and problem-solving skills through the critically informed practice of designing, planning, and producing a major project in the form of a creative production, portfolio work, report, or thesis. The course also provides opportunities for students to take internships in their respective fields and to demonstrate qualification for possible entry into Curtin University’s PhD program.﻿This Creative Writing major develops students’ practical skills and knowledge across a variety of writing styles, such as fiction, poetry, and writing for performance, as well as range of emerging and experimental genres. The major encourages experimentation and creativity and stimulates critical awareness through discussion of relevant theory, and engagement with digital technologies. Students master writing skills and extend their creative and critical capacities by undertaking a project in their second year of study. They also have an option to practice these skills and develop their portfolio through internship with a professional organisation. Students with outstanding results will have an option to further strengthen their critical capacity in preparation for possible PhD study.

Unleash your inner wordsmith. Learn the narrative techniques different types of writing use and why, before putting pen to paper yourself. Develop short scenes for the stage, deconstruct poetry, and get knee-deep in creative writing workshops.

Creative writing involves expression and skills. It also involves reading. This practical unit introduces students to different approaches and ways of thinking about creative writing. Students engage in a series of lectures and workshops, learning a range of creative writing skills and topics. Students are encouraged to be experimental and adventurous in their writing. Seminars address different creative writing topics and readings so that students can learn about various genres, methods and approaches. The workshops are interactive; they aim to increase understanding of the process of creative writing. The aim of this unit is for students to learn, achieve and realise their creativity and writing skills in their creative work, engaging with lecture and reading content and participating in writing workshops, on-course writing exercises, and doing set assignments.

Play with narrative and time as you develop adventurous creative writing pieces. Reflect on your creative process and the approaches adopted by other writers. Experiment with creative writing styles. Place value on the drafting and revision processes.

Please note: This subject was previously titled: Concepts and Practice in Fiction and PoetryThe subject encourages responses to different genres and theoretical approaches to creative writing. It aims to develop practical written and reflective skills, and the capacity to use language and form. It encourages students to attempt new ways of writing, to develop their work into finished texts, and to consciously position these texts within the wider discourse. In this subject, creative writing is taught within contexts of contemporary relevance, in order to broaden students&#39; range and encourage reflection about their writing. Students are expected to develop their creative writing and increase their knowledge about its contexts by producing writing throughout the subject. Subject topics and readings provide literary and theoretical examples to stimulate intellectual and creative enquiry.

Brainstorm new ways of writing and reflecting on your work. Build worlds and write with genre, identity and gender in mind. Critique theoretical and creative texts. Produce conceptually-driven creative writing pieces that extend your practice.

Creative Writing 2: Short-form Fiction

This unit offers students the opportunity to develop a research project based on specific genres of creative writing and to reflect on how this affects their own creative practice. Students will have the opportunity to read and analyse different genres and to research current scholarship and publishing trends in these genres. Working independently, students will hone their critical research, writing, and presentation skills. By the end of this unit, students will gain a critical understanding of the contemporary academic and professional contexts of their own writing.

Research for Creative Writing

This practical writing unit reflects on the dynamic relationships that exist between creative writing practice and digital, networked and interactive cultures. Students will be introduced to techniques in authoring short-form narrative or poetry-based digital and interactive works, exploring technological and literary questions relating to the writing and production of digital works. Students will engage with open-source software and network media to develop skills that advance their digital literacy. At the end of the unit students will have utilised two or more technologies in the writing and production of a minor and major digital creative work.

Digital Creative Writing

In this unit students develop their creative writing practice across one or more writing genres, drafting new creative work in the genres of the short story or novel chapter. Students extend their skills both in the crafting and the analysis of the craft of writing, and practice close reading skills. New approaches to craft and technique or genre are explored, and students reflect upon and interrogate their writing and writing process. Analysis and evaluation of published creative works and contemporary narrative studies inform and enlarge students’ writing skills and technical vocabularies. At the end of the unit students will have drafted, workshopped and written a new creative work in their chosen genre.

Creative Writing Seminar: Narrative Fundamentals

This subject provides an introduction to the fundamentals of contemporary practice in a range of forms pertinent to creative writing industries and the student&#39;s progress through a creative writing major in a bachelor&#39;s degree. The forms focussed on are: the poem, the performance script and film script, electronic literature forms, the critical review, the essay and the exegesis.You will have opportunity to develop basic skills and understandings of the structures in each of these forms, and will be provided with a supportive environment for producing a folio of original pieces reflecting your development.

Break down the fundamental elements that go into specific creative writing forms. Focus in on how poems are structured. Compare the way that scripts are written for the screen versus the stage. Write pieces of your own that demonstrate your knowledge.

Extended, advanced study in a selected genre or individual project under the supervision of a lecturer. Applications to enrol in this subject, when pre-requisites have not been met, will be considered by the Subject Coordinator.

Creative Writing Supervised Project

This subject was previously known as Introduction to Writing.This subject explores representation in writing and how the dynamic relationship between Self and Other plays a central role in the writing process. The representation of the self and of others is central to a broad range of written genres and forms. Students of professional writing will find that the subject introduces them to a variety of genres and forms essential to the portfolio of a professional writer, and will discover how creative writing techniques can enrich their professional work.This subject is NOT an introduction to the mechanics of writing (grammar, punctuation, expression, etc.), but an introduction to the writing profession, publishing and the genres and forms of creative and professional writing.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’.
