The Human Rights degree is designed to promote a critical understanding of the human rights discourse. The degree covers modern human rights institutions and how these work for state and non-state actors. The degree also explores the political, historical and philosophical development of ideas about human rights which underpin current systems. In recognition of the importance of a globalised understanding of human rights, the degree explores ideas about human rights from multi-disciplinary, multicultural and multi-religious perspectives, as well as looks at the roles of social movements, grass-roots campaigns and other actors have played in the development of human rights ideas and practices. The degree takes a problematising approach to education, provoking students to engage with a range of ideas and perspectives and to develop their own positions. The degree employs both theoretical and practical learning methods giving students the chance to put their learning into practice and to pursue individual areas of interest more deeply.

Although associations between crime and mental illness have a long history, the relationship is complex and contentious. Problem areas include media representations and social constructions of violent offenders, methodological and conceptual inconsistencies, and limited appreciation of the heterogeneity of mental health issues. This subject of study aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the evidence concerning the crime-mental health relationship. Factors other than mental illness that may be associated with violence and general criminality are explored, as are ethical challenges relating to this area. Particular mental disorders most often linked with criminality are examined and the relevant evidence is evaluated. Based on the content of this subject of study, students will demonstrate knowledge of ethical challenges and provide recommendations for best practice for both empirical research and policy.

Students discover how the rules of contract formation and operation apply in the business world. Introduction to Business Law

This subject is the second of two Masters project subjects involving supervised independent research in/of a discipline-relevant topic. This subject focuses on the completion and presentation of the research commenced in HUMN600 Masters Research Project 1, and will be taken in the next available study period following that subject. The specific nature of the project, the methods of research and the submission format will be determined in consultation with a discipline supervisor and may include professionally orientated tasks or components. Masters Research Project 1

This subject was previously known as BLW22.Studying this subject will introduce you to the Australian Taxation System and get you to critically consider the various aspects of the taxation legislation with a focus on Income Tax, Fringe Benefit Tax, Goods and Services Tax and Capital Gains Tax as well as a detailed investigation into the taxing of various tax entities used in Australia. You will be exposed to considering the global aspect of taxation and how foreign companies and individuals are treated for tax purposes in Australia. Being a tax professional is a privileged position but it comes with both social and ethical responsibilities and in this unit we will identify these as well as taking a detailed looked at the various bodies associated with the administration and review of the Australian Taxation System such as the Australia Taxation Office, Inspector General of Taxation and the Tax Practitioners Board.
