This subject was previously known as Beginning Japanese. This subject introduces basic communicative skills in Japanese at an elementary level. Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing characters (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji) through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. Students will also be introduced to Japanese society and culture through mini-lectures, audio-visual presentations and virtual real-time classroom-based or online tutorials.﻿Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. It only takes two hours to complete online, and provides you with vital information about studying with Curtin University. The cognitive benefits to learning another language are many and varied. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure. This subject is for beginners and aims to establish elementary communicative competence in Japanese. You will learn basic aural and oral skills in Japanese (including how to introduce yourself, talk about your daily activities, and use fundamental forms of verbs, adjectives and particles. You will also develop basic skills in reading and writing in Japanese (all hiragana and katakana, and elementary-level kanji). In this subject you will gain an awareness about some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Japanese for beginners. Learn to speak, read and write in Japanese to a basic level on a range of topics. If you enjoy Japanese society and culture, this online language course should give you a taste of Japan and its everyday way of life.

German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and one of the most important international languages. It is the official language of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg and is also an official language of Belgium and Switzerland. This subject is designed for students with no or little previous knowledge of German. The emphasis throughout the subject is on the acquisition of the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in everyday German. You will also discuss aspects of contemporary German culture and society. You will achieve language proficiency equivalent to Level A1/1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

German Language 1A

This subject was previously known as SLAX101 Introductory Spanish I.This subject is for students who have never studied Spanish before. Students who have studied Spanish or had some informal exposure to the language through family, friends or travel should contact the unit convenor before enrolling in this unit. The course follows a communicative approach and is designed to develop skills in listening comprehension and speaking, but similarly promotes proficiency in reading and writing in order to cultivate the competencies and guidelines established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The subject aims to prepare students to, among others: introduce themselves and others, ask and answer questions about personal details, understand and use everyday expressions, and interact in simple ways with native speakers of Spanish.

Start your exploration of the Spanish language. Expose yourself to Spanish writings and conversational scenarios. Articulate words, phrases, names and sentences. Learn to read, write, speak and comprehend some Spanish to a basic level.

This subject is available to students who have no knowledge of Japanese. It is an introductory subject focusing on elementary spoken and written Japanese. Students learn to read hiragana and katakana syllabic scripts as well as approximately 30 kanji characters. Students will also be introduced to Japanese culture. Those who have prior learning of Japanese should contact the Japanese Program coordinator for a placement test (k.okano@latrobe.edu.au). Students may be asked to move to another level by the subject coordinator prior to the university census date (usually in week 3 or 4). JPN1001 is offered as a semester one and semester two subject. The follow-on subject, JPN1002, is only offered in semester two or in the summer. For those who wish to undertake JPN1002 as a follow-on subject, your options are to take JPN1001 in semester one and JPN 1002 in semester two OR to take JPN1001 in semester two and JPN1002 as a summer three week intensive starting in late Jan or early Feb.

This subject is suitable for students with no or very limited experience in foreign language learning and is designed to support the learning needs of a university student with no or very limited knowledge of the Korean language. With a focus on supportive and scaffolded approach to language learning, this unit will introduce students to basic written and spoken Korean communication skills needed in daily life in Korea. On successful completion of this subject students will be able to master basic communication skills required when travelling or working in Korea, such as greetings, introductions, talking about past events, asking and giving permission as well as asking and giving directions. Students will also be introduced to the Korean writing system hangeul, and learn skills in writing basic emails, text messages and SMS messages in Korean while learning about Korean society, culture and history to contextualise their learning.On successful completion of Korean Beginners 1 and 2, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language TOPIK-I Level 2 lower level proficiency.Korean language study is highly recommended for students planning a career in engineering, science, commerce, international relations, creative arts or teaching. Korean Beginners 1

This subject was previously known as Beginning Chinese. ﻿This subject introduces basic communicative skills in Mandarin Chinese at an elementary level. Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. Students will also be introduced to Chinese society, Chinese culture and the structure of the Chinese language through mini-lectures, audio-visual presentations, virtual real-time classroom and online tutorials.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. This subject was previously known as JPNX101/JNPX1010 Introductory Japanese I.This subject provides introductory Japanese language instruction for students with no previous knowledge of Japanese. Students develop basic speaking, listening, reading &amp; writing skills, including mastery of the hiragana &amp; katakana scripts. By the end of the course, students should be able to describe their surroundings, ask questions, make plans, and effectively participate in a variety of fundamental conversations. Furthermore, the course will also assist students in developing an awareness of sociocultural issues which influence Japanese language use. The class provides opportunities for interactive language learning, and a wide variety of methods for Japanese practice through the use of online resources.

Begin your journey to writing, reading and speaking Japanese. Learn about different components of the Japanese writing system such as hiragana and katakana. Acquire a grasp of kana scripts. Interact with online resources to test your studies.

Japanese Studies I

In this subject, you will develop practical abilities in both receptive and production skills in Auslan to a level of basic communicative competence. You will be introduced to the key grammatical structures of Auslan and the use of the language in its appropriate cultural and social context.

Australian Sign Language 1A

Across the world, more than 1.4 billion people communicate in Mandarin every day. To future proof your career in a global market, knowledge of this language will hold you in good stead. This subject is designed to provide an introduction to Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin), and how to study this important and fascinatingly distinctive language. From the start you will learn to participate in simple conversations in Chinese. Initially the focus is on pronouncing the sounds and tones of Mandarin accurately, and noting them using the &#39;pinyin&#39; phonetic script. Then you will enter the world of Chinese characters, discovering how they represent meanings, and learning the correct way to write them. The simple principles of word order at the basis of Chinese grammar will be explained and practised. Through learning the language you will discover various significant aspects of Chinese life and culture.
