This subject is available to students who have no knowledge of Japanese. It is an introductory subject focusing on elementary spoken and written Japanese. You will learn to read hiragana and katakana syllabic scripts as well as approximately 30 kanji characters. You will also be introduced to Japanese culture. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations. Those who have prior learning of Japanese should contact the Japanese Program coordinator for a placement test (k.okano@latrobe.edu.au). You may be asked to move to another level by the subject coordinator prior to the university census date (usually in week 3 or 4). JPN1001 is offered as a semester one and semester two subject. The follow-on subject, JPN1002, is only offered in semester two. For those who wish to undertake JPN1002 as a follow-on subject, your options are to take JPN1001 in semester one and JPN1002 in semester two OR to take JPN1001 in semester two and JPN1002 in semester two in the following year. The lecture is delivered online, live, and recorded and uploaded to LMS.

In today’s global economy, the ability to communicate in more than one language is essential. Not only is French widely used as a working language in business environments making it a career asset, it is also the language of many great works of film and literature. If you have little or no knowledge of French, this subject will help you develop the ability to communicate in the French speaking world and enhance your appreciation of French culture; music, film, theatre. You will learn how to read, understand, write and speak an elementary level of French. By the end of the unit you will be acquainted with basic grammatical structures. This subject also introduces you to many elements of French life and Francophone culture.

This subject was previously known as JPNX101/JNPX1010 Introductory Japanese I.This subject provides introductory Japanese language instruction for students with no previous knowledge of Japanese. Students develop basic speaking, listening, reading &amp; writing skills, including mastery of the hiragana &amp; katakana scripts. By the end of the course, students should be able to describe their surroundings, ask questions, make plans, and effectively participate in a variety of fundamental conversations. Furthermore, the course will also assist students in developing an awareness of sociocultural issues which influence Japanese language use. The class provides opportunities for interactive language learning, and a wide variety of methods for Japanese practice through the use of online resources.

Begin your journey to writing, reading and speaking Japanese. Learn about different components of the Japanese writing system such as hiragana and katakana. Acquire a grasp of kana scripts. Interact with online resources to test your studies.

Japanese Studies I

This subject examines the relationship between language and culture and explores the different varieties of language and dialects, as well as the various styles and registers that can exist within any one language. The subject explores theories of language and language learning, including transcultural communication, to enhance the ability and confidence of teachers to work successfully in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Specific reference will be made to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and dialects as well as people learning English as an additional language.

This introductory course introduces students to spoken and written Thai. In this course, students will learn the tones, consonants, vowels, essential grammar, polite particles, and the writing system of the Thai language. Students will also have the opportunity to learn a range of simple sentence patterns. They will learn to read and write basic sentences which will enable them to use the language in day-to-day situations. The course covers basic knowledge of Thailand, greetings, self and family, time and date, describing things around you, and asking for help, information, and directions. Cultural issues in relation to language use and politeness will also be included.This is a fast paced academic course at a University level, Via face-to-face video at a set time prescribed by the University. Please be aware of potential time zone differences.

Thai 1

This subject is suitable for students with no or very limited experience in foreign language learning and is designed to support the learning needs of a university student with no or very limited knowledge of the Korean language. With a focus on supportive and scaffolded approach to language learning, this unit will introduce students to basic written and spoken Korean communication skills needed in daily life in Korea. On successful completion of this subject students will be able to master basic communication skills required when travelling or working in Korea, such as greetings, introductions, talking about past events, asking and giving permission as well as asking and giving directions. Students will also be introduced to the Korean writing system hangeul, and learn skills in writing basic emails, text messages and SMS messages in Korean while learning about Korean society, culture and history to contextualise their learning.On successful completion of Korean Beginners 1 and 2, students will reach a level of competency equivalent to the National Institute of Korean Language’s Standard Curriculum for Korean Language TOPIK-I Level 2 lower level proficiency.Korean language study is highly recommended for students planning a career in engineering, science, commerce, international relations, creative arts or teaching. This subject covers both written and spoken Japanese at an introductory level that builds on prior knowledge gained in Beginning Japanese. A communication-oriented approach is used to help students develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing Standard Japanese so that they will be able to interact with speakers of Japanese in simple day-to-day situations. Beginning Japanese Developing

Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. This is an advanced unit in Indonesian. You will examine a range of major issues in the intricate relationship between Islam, society and the state in contemporary Indonesia.In this subject you will read a variety of complex Indonesian language texts and learn how to write your own Indonesian texts at an advanced level.The major issues you will cover in the texts include: Islam and Indonesian history; the role of Islam in the state; liberal Islam vs fundamentalist Islam; &#39;radical Islam&#39; vs &#39;moderate Islam&#39;; jihad and terrorism; &#39;cultural Islam&#39;; and Islam and local culture, all of which are crucial to understand contemporary Indonesia.Enhance your career options by extending your understanding of the history and culture of one of the region’s most rapidly developing economies.
