This degree was previously known as Graduate Certificate in Internet Communications.
The Graduate Certificate in Digital and Social Media provides you with an opportunity to learn some of the key aspects of the human dimensions of the Internet: how people network, collaborate, and share information through Internet communications, media and design. Depending on choice of subjects, you will develop skills in one or more of: creating, maintaining and managing online communications for personal and commercial interactions, as well as gaining knowledge of the social and cultural contexts within which those interactions occur. The approach is interdisciplinary: you develop skills in websites, public communication, social network management, collaboration via virtual organisations, and web media production. At the same time you will understand the political, economic and social changes associated with the Internet. By taking this degree, you will add to your existing qualification a basic level knowledge and skills needed for you to become an astute, engaged professional communicator via the Internet.

User Experience (UX) is where research and design are applied to create interactions with products, platforms, and services that users love. UX focuses on developing a deep understanding of users, what they need, what they value, their abilities, and also their limitations. This is crucial in both the physical and digital world, and key to designing solutions in the context of the UN SDGs. These UXs are evaluated through needs, values, emotions, and attitudes towards products, systems or services in human-brand interactions, with an emphasis on ethical considerations for a diversity of users. Crucially, students learn to optimize UXs for Accessible (Universal) Design to adhere to important Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) in accordance with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through various Authentic Assessments you will develop skills that are critical in marketing and business. Get to know your user, and understand how their needs should shape their online experience. User experience (UX) design is a valued skill that draws on a varied toolbox, include testing, iterating and collaborating, to deliver enhanced experiences.

This subject explores the broader spaces and nature of play online, and how it relates to the development of digital forms of gaming. The nature of immersion is questioned and the role of interactivity investigated, along with critical perspectives on the popular but controversial notion of &#39;gamification.&#39; It examines a series of gaming tropes and themes, games as texts, and the ways that games enter social frameworks to convey, refract, engage with, and resist power structures. An ongoing focus is on the function of rules in framing play, particularly in relation to how players cheat, hack and mod their games to break those rules.

Love it or hate it, the idea of ‘gamification’ has taken root. Examine what it means to play online, and how gaming can both resist and reinforce traditional power structures. Explore the function of rules, and how hacks and mods change the game.

In this subject students will explore, analyse and evaluate current leading-edge and emerging technologies. Examining these technologies through social, political, and cultural lenses, students will explore how technologies are changing education, including the ideas about and approaches to learners, educators, and learning environments. The unit encourages students to think through the implications of these changes for the future of learning with technology, considering both advantages and risks.
