Security in Computing and IT

This subject is designed to provide you with hands on practical experience developing software in a project environment. You work in teams and will complete projects from inception to implementation.
This subject includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.
As the project teams and projects will be assigned during the first week all enrolled students are advised to engage with the subject from the beginning of week 1.
Please note: This subject is considered to be a capstone subject for the Bachelor of Information Technology degree in which students demonstrate their competency in a (simulated) Work Integrated Learning (WIL) environment.
All students seeking the Bachelor of Information Technology award will need to complete this subject.

Programming Project

Security has become a focal area in IT; it has grown and evolved significantly in recent years and different areas of specialisation have emerged.This course gives an introduction to technical aspects of security for future IT professionals, and presents the foundations. It looks at fundamental cryptographic and security mechanisms used in various areas of networked applications and computing, including operating systems, databases and web-based applications as well as modern privacy preserving systems and blockchains.For computer systems that are used and relied upon in many areas of life, security has become an important aspect; availability and correct operation are essential. IT professionals working in the field need to be well acquainted with the security features of the tools and applications they use and produce. Protection of data regardless of the information they contain is a critical task, and requires expertise.

This subject will give you substantial hands-on, practical learning experiences and will motivate you through engagement in the creative, explorative and meaningful development of technological artefacts that operate in real world contexts.  
During the duration of the subject you will collaborate in a group with fellow students to progress through the full lifecycle of an IT project/product, from ideation to design to development to delivery.  
Formal project group formation and registration will occur during week 1 of the subject and regular (weekly) ongoing engagement with members and mentors will be required throughout the subject starting from week 2 onward, including synchronous online communication with your group and mentor using via live interactive chat, as well as asynchronous communication via collaboration tools/message boards.
