Information technology and computing increasingly define how the world operates. Software permeates every area of modern living, from the smallest personal device to automating  entire industries. Information Technology professionals are responsible for designing the software that runs so much of our lives, and for creating systems that handle and analyse incredible amounts of data.
The Diploma in Information Technology is a one-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) course that will provide students with a foundation in computing, and the flexibility to take on more advanced and specialised topics - be that specific technical skills, professional skills, or mathematical areas related to modern computing.
This degree is designed for students seeking an introduction to study in information technology or looking to grow their computer science, data science, or mathematical skills. Experience the power of programming with an introduction to computational thinking and the fundamental concepts of programming, sensors, data and robotics. Ideal if you have not previously studied programming, or you want to broaden your scope, this subject uses visual languages, JavaScript and programmable game environments to introduce concepts quickly, enabling you to build powerful programs and creations. Using programming concepts as a foundation, you will control bots in games and robot simulations. You will also explore topics in mark-up languages (e.g. HTML), natural language processing (how machines can process human language), and asynchronous programming (how robots, agents, and devices can communicate and coordinate). The subject is designed to prepare you for the study of professional programming languages in computer science or information technology degrees.

Computational Thinking

Modern software development is a multi-billion dollar industry, where problem-solving skills and solid understanding of programming techniques and practices are vital for producing high quality software. Building core knowledge for the study of computer science, this subject introduces you to techniques for computer program development. You will gain experience using a high-level programming language, and UNIX-type operating systems for developing and debugging computer programs. Introduction to Programming and the UNIX Environment

These include data analysis, advanced graphs and image analysis.  You will develop programs in MATLAB, applying these to a wide range real-world of topical and emerging issues in the physical and life sciences.

Introduction to Scientific Programming

In a world where technology is constantly evolving, this subject will give you a well-rounded understanding of the application and impact of contemporary technologies and the impact on lawyers and clients. Structured in two parts, the first component provides you with a detailed analysis of the wide varieties of technologies and innovations in legal practice, from large international law firms to boutique sole practices, in-house counsel, community law centres and corporates. The second half examines the impacts of blockchain, artificial intelligence (big data) and other evolving technologies on clients and examines how lawyers can understand the risks and needs for clients.

Technology and the Law

Educators need a comprehensive knowledge of current digital learning principles and practices to create effective online learning environments. In this subject you will examine the issues related to the design, development, implementation, assessment and evaluation of online learning environments. You will achieve this through the exploration, investigation, formulation and resolution of issues identified in institutional, technological, pedagogical, and ethical contexts. You will explore current learning theories suitable for digital learning environments in order to make links between the theory and practice. Digital tools are becoming indispensable in the modern classroom for creating engaging, challenging and inspiring learning environments. Studying this subject, you will explore digital learning essentials from theories and concepts to implementation methods and strategies. You will analyse approaches to designing and implementing digital learning in education, training and workplace settings. You will also examine organisational change in incorporating digital tools into learning environments and evaluate the ways in which digital tools can be applied to meet learners’ needs.

Introduction to Learning with Technology

This can be costly and complicated to implement, but all systems must be able to use technology to deliver business value. We look at the framework of business forces, enabling technology and management potential that underpin information systems. Bridging technology and business needs, you will develop work-ready knowledge of contemporary information systems. Topics include business strategy, intelligence and analytics, networking and cloud computing, database management, information security, digital goods and customer profiling. Focusing on applications for business problems, you are taught how to mine real-life datasets, create data visualisations, explore data management in social media and analyse the ways to deploy cloud computing in Australian businesses.

Management Information Systems

The internet has changed the way people interact with, and think about, computers. From online news to social networking sites, the diversity of ways that we utilise the internet is extensive; yet how many people understand how this technology works and how to create a web page?  This subject introduces you to the fundamentals and modern concepts of web development, equipping you with skills that are increasingly valuable as the internet becomes further embedded in our lives.  You will learn how web servers and clients communicate using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). You will also explore the formal languages used for web site development: HyperText Markup Language (HTML) used to generate the structure of web pages, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to apply stylistic features that enhance web page presentation, and Javascript and jQuery to provide dynamic user interactions.  Techniques such as server-side scripting (PHP) with session management are also discussed.

Web Programming

This subject was previously known as Functional and Reactive Programming.A programming language gives us a way of modelling and expressing a computer program. As programs tackle more complex tasks using big, fast, and distributed flows of data, the need for more powerful ways to think about and express our programs will only increase.  This subject introduces you to the paradigms (the particular styles or features) behind advanced programming languages used by many of the world’s leading software companies.  Taught predominantly using Scala, a mixed-paradigm language that will familiarise you with many concepts, the subject helps you to develop knowledge and technical skills with broad practical applications.  You will learn about functional programming, different type systems, and techniques for asynchronous, streaming and reactive programming. These techniques are useful across a wide spectrum – from making small problems simple, to modern event-based web systems, to “fast data” systems that process large flows of asynchronous data.
