This course provides an introduction to the politics of international organisations and international law from the perspective of the International Relations (IR) discipline, with a specific focus on peace and conflict. More specifically, it aims to introduce students to i) the main IR approaches to studying international organisations and law and the key debates surrounding them ii) some of the most influential international organisations and legal frameworks and how they operate and iii) central issues pertaining to international law, norms and organisations in the areas of peacekeeping, conflict prevention and human rights. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously completed 2019IBA Politics of International Law &amp; International Organisations, 2019GIR Politics of International Law and Organisations or 2019GIR International Organisations, Peace and Conflict.

International Organisations, Peace and Conflict

This subject was previously known as POIX108 Introduction to Global Politics.Globalisation has had dramatic implications for the structure and conduct of global politics, now defined by the multiplication of actors and networks. Contemporary crises can no longer be contained within state borders and global problems such as climate change, poverty, health insecurities, and violent conflicts call for global solutions. This unit equips students with the tools to understand the forces that shape the world we live in by introducing them to the key issues, institutions, ideas, and actors involved in global politics. It first outlines the historical context, key theories and concepts, and fundamental institutions of contemporary global politics. Students will then explore important global issues including the changing nature of war, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomous weapons, climate change, poverty, and refugee ‘crises’. Overall, the unit provides students with foundational knowledge about the complexity of global politics, problems and solutions.

This subject was previously known as POIX101 Australian Politics in Global Context.In this subject, we critically assess Australian politics from the perspective of political and economic history, through the lens of social power and financial interests, and drilling down into contemporary debates about economic crisis, globalisation, nationalism, environmental catastrophe and war. With this approach in mind, we examine key Australian political institutions, ideologies, and issues. What is the nature of Australia’s key political institutions (the Constitution, the High Court, Federalism, Government and Parliament), and are they democratic and just? Could we live without them? What are some of the radical critiques of these institutions and the interests they serve? What is ‘Australia’, after all – a unified nation of peoples with shared identities and interests, or a construct that serves wealth and power by masking deep social fractures, or something else again?

Stare down the barrel of Australian political history. Learn about the Dismissal and the Great Depression. Investigate the two-party system and other political institutions. Take on debated hot topics such as globalisation, climate change and war.

The world has become increasingly interconnected as a result of increased trade, communication and cultural exchange. This interconnection, or globalisation, creates a need for you to develop intercultural, knowledge, understanding and competence. In this course you will explore Australia&#39;s place in the Asia-Pacific region with its accompanying strong cultural ties to the history of Australia&#39;s First Peoples and the Western world. You will examine the influences of the past, contemporary issues and possibilities for the future. This course is designed to commence your professional learning about the cultural protocols and knowledge required when engaging in cross-cultural relationships within Australia and across the Asia-Pacific region. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have completed 1005GBS Engaging Australia and the Asia-Pacific at Griffith University.

This subject was previously known as PLTX392 American Politics, POIX392 United States Politics: Money, Culture, Power.US politics is today, as in much of its past, dominated by money and the power that money can buy. US cultural life is also preoccupied with money, in ways that profoundly affect the distribution of political power. Proceeding from these premises, this unit explores the relationship between money, culture and power in contemporary US politics. Topics covered include campaign financing, interest groups and the media; the impact of social inequalities of class, race, gender and sexual preference on US politics; the role of religion and political parties in the formulation of dominant political ideas; and the politics surrounding the global financial crisis and its aftermath.

Take stock of how money and culture feeds into the American political system. Explain the power of the Constitution in US politics. Monitor the influence of special interest groups. See how race, faith and the economy intertwine with policy.

United States Politics: Money, Culture, Power

This subject examines Australia&#39;s changing relations with the Asia Pacific after World War II, in particular Australia’s engagement with the region in the post-Cold War era. It focuses on Australian foreign policy responses to the key regional issues, such as political and economic relations, foreign aid, trade, immigration, terrorism and climate change. In doing so, you will develop knowledge and critical thinking skills regarding Australian foreign policy in the Asia Pacific.

Australia's Relations with the Asia Pacific

Are you curious about international relations in the Asia Pacific region? This subject enables you to study the region in a wide variety of contexts. In Module 1, you will examine the region in a historic context and explore various theoretical approaches. Module 2 leads you through the key players in the region, including China, Japan, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Southeast Asian states, US, Australia and New Zealand. You will also examine traditional security concerns, such as North Korea nuclear issues and the territorial disputes about the East and South China Sea. In Module 3, you will develop your understanding of non-traditional security issues in the Asia Pacific by examining the rise of nationalism and national identity, as well as recent developments of Indigenous rights and human security in the region. Throughout, you will hone your critical thinking, communication and analytical skills.

International Relations of the Asia Pacific

This subject introduces students to fundamental principles in international environmental law and examines certain important issues in this area at the global level. More specifically, the subject will critically analyse the significant principles involved in the operation of the international legal system and how the international community, through law and policy, responds to global and regional environmental issues. A sectoral approach will then be taken by examining the application of international environmental law in certain specific areas. The main focus will be on examining the law and policy which has been applied to deal with environmental problems in an international and transboundary context. Special reference to domestic laws and initiatives will be made in evaluating the impact of international environmental obligations on natural resource management.

International Environmental Law

TAS-HIR101 provides students with an overview of the theory and practice of international relations. The subject is divided into two modules. In module one, you will learn about theoretical approaches to the study of IR including introductions to realist, liberal, critical, feminist and green approaches. Each theory provides an important perspective on the international system, foregrounding some actors and issues while backgrounding others. In module two, the subject examines important topics in international relations related to international security, war and peace, great power rivalry, the United Nations system including the United Nations Security Council, global poverty and international development, global climate politics, international terrorism, and human rights. The subject provides you with an introduction to the process, substance, and fast changing nature of international relations and world politics, including a basic knowledge of some key theoretical debates in the field. Following completion of the subject, you will have a broad understanding of international relations, which not only enables the better understanding of global events generally but also provides an essential platform to those wishing to complete a major in the field.

Environmental issues are gaining prominence in both national and international politics and it is increasingly apparent that human activities are driving significant changes in our planet&#39;s environment. This unit provides a critical introduction to the theory and practice of global environmental politics and its interaction with other areas of global governance. Students will be introduced to debates in green political theory, to developing world perspectives on environmental movements and to the ways in which environmental issues are conceptualised by major theories of international relations. Cases covered will be drawn from both Australian and international contexts. They will include climate change, geoengineering, energy security, biodiversity, human-animal relationships, food security and management of common pool resources such as forests, airsheds and fisheries.
