You will develop an understanding of the knowledge, values, and skills required to work effectively within the Australian context while being culturally accountable to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities. It provides you with a foundation for considering the contemporary issues faced by practitioners working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, including the impact of racism and its implications for practice.You will explore the positive effects of cultural traditions on family, values, roles, and parenting, and examines the dynamics of power and powerlessness in professional practice. Through a critical analysis of privilege and whiteness, you will gain insight into how these concepts shape their interactions with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Additionally, the course highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives on historical and contemporary research and practice in psychology and counselling, emphasizing the importance of culturally informed and respectful approaches.  Join us to develop a culturally accountable approach that respects and honours Aboriginal Australian Peoples and communities, preparing you to make a meaningful impact in your professional practice. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Psychology

The two-way science subject explores the intersection between Western and Indigenous Science knowledge. We will explore the deep connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with the land, waters, and sky, and how this has been fostered throughout the millennia. This knowledge encompasses areas of knowledge such as medicine, engineering, ecology, astronomy and sociology. Students will broaden their understanding of Indigenous pedagogy and knowledge transfer, how both Western and Indigenous cultures can mutually benefit from utilising Indigenous science Knowledges, as well as investigating the ways in which students can do so regarding their own field of study. This subject will outline specific disciplines which have benefited from the integration of Indigenous Knowledges, and students will have the opportunity to hear from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and knowledge holders, engage in practical exercises, and participate in field trips. Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Two Way Science

In this subject, we explore several current debates on matters of importance to Indigenous communities and mainstream Australia. These topics are all contentious and they are often divisive. We take a deep dive into the discourses both for and against and critically reflect on how they shape political action in these spaces. A broad range of voices are examined, including leading Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal thinkers from across the political spectrum and community sector, many of whom hold conflicting reasoning behind their positions. The role of the media, existing power structures and socio-political history have a significant role in shaping current discourses on topics related to Indigenous Australians and in this subject, students begin to unpack these ideas.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Hot Topics in Indigenous Australia

Students are invited to explore the contemporary situation of language in Aboriginal Australia, contextualised in its various social settings, along with a strong emphasis on First Voice. This includes a focus on the languages of Victoria and language revitalisation, as well as new varieties of Aboriginal language such as Kriol. The subject provides students with the opportunity to reflect on understandings of language and culture, continuity and changes in the face of disruption, and on their connection with the local environment and its people.

Language in Aboriginal Australia

This course describes the communication and work practice skills and knowledge required to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the various business industry contexts. It deals specifically with cross-cultural awareness, competencies and issues involving working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, organisations and communities. Graduates from this course will possess the knowledge required to gain a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander &#39;ways of thinking&#39; by learning more about Indigenous society (knowledges, traditions, and culture), and the appropriate use of protocols when engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their businesses and the wider communities. Students should not enrol in this subject if they have previously studied 3200GBS Engaging with First Peoples, 3100AFE Indigenous Australians: Everybody&#39;s Business, 3100GBS Indigenous Australians: Everybody&#39;s Business at Griffith University.

Indigenous Australians: Everybody's Business

This subject provides a critical reflection on issues currently facing First Nations peoples, in Australia and globally, in achieving justice. Students will be exposed to Indigenous perspectives on justice through Indigenous-authored research that allows the lived experiences of First Nations people to be heard. Using a strengths-based approach, the course provides students to consider the intersections of history, culture and justice in the ways we have responded and should respond to crime.

First Nations and Justice

This subject was previously known as VIS25 Australian Aboriginal Art.
In this subject you will explore the richness, complexity and diversity of Aboriginal art in Australia. Learn about the importance of art in Aboriginal culture, the impact of British colonisation and the strategies that Aboriginal artists use to maintain cultural knowledge, fight for political rights, and bear witness to the ongoing survival and resilience of Aboriginal Australians.

This subject investigates culture, communication and representation. We examine the complexity of culture and our engagement with other cultures and culturally diverse thinking and perspectives. As part of this, we explore Indigenous cultures, histories, knowledge, perspectives and values. The unit also explores the relationship between media and culture, critically analysing media representations that inform our ideas about particular topics, other cultures and people. Please note: This subject is available in Macquarie Session 3, which is an intensive semester that spans only 5 intensive teaching weeks, plus a mid-session recess and an assessment period. Students are advised to enrol in only one or two subjects in Session 3. Students who would prefer to take the unit over 13 teaching weeks should enrol in the Session 1 or 2 offering.This unit introduces students to contemporary Indigenous thought, culture and politics in Australia. Students in this unit learn about Indigenous futurism and activism, the history of race and settler colonialism in Australia, and Indigenous studies and decolonial thinking. Students will also be introduced to contemporary expressions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and identities. This is a transformative unit that provides students with skills and knowledge to be agents of change in their communities and the world at large.
