Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Psychology

The two-way science subject explores the intersection between Western and Indigenous Science knowledge. We will explore the deep connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with the land, waters, and sky, and how this has been fostered throughout the millennia. This knowledge encompasses areas of knowledge such as medicine, engineering, ecology, astronomy and sociology. Students will broaden their understanding of Indigenous pedagogy and knowledge transfer, how both Western and Indigenous cultures can mutually benefit from utilising Indigenous science Knowledges, as well as investigating the ways in which students can do so regarding their own field of study. Two Way Science

In this subject, we explore several current debates on matters of importance to Indigenous communities and mainstream Australia. These topics are all contentious and they are often divisive. We take a deep dive into the discourses both for and against and critically reflect on how they shape political action in these spaces. A broad range of voices are examined, including leading Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal thinkers from across the political spectrum and community sector, many of whom hold conflicting reasoning behind their positions. The role of the media, existing power structures and socio-political history have a significant role in shaping current discourses on topics related to Indigenous Australians and in this subject, students begin to unpack these ideas.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Hot Topics in Indigenous Australia

Students are invited to explore the contemporary situation of language in Aboriginal Australia, contextualised in its various social settings, along with a strong emphasis on First Voice. This includes a focus on the languages of Victoria and language revitalisation, as well as new varieties of Aboriginal language such as Kriol. The subject provides students with the opportunity to reflect on understandings of language and culture, continuity and changes in the face of disruption, and on their connection with the local environment and its people.

Language in Aboriginal Australia

This course describes the communication and work practice skills and knowledge required to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the various business industry contexts. It deals specifically with cross-cultural awareness, competencies and issues involving working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, organisations and communities. Graduates from this course will possess the knowledge required to gain a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander &#39;ways of thinking&#39; by learning more about Indigenous society (knowledges, traditions, and culture), and the appropriate use of protocols when engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their businesses and the wider communities. Indigenous Australians: Everybody's Business

This subject provides a critical reflection on issues currently facing First Nations peoples, in Australia and globally, in achieving justice. Students will be exposed to Indigenous perspectives on justice through Indigenous-authored research that allows the lived experiences of First Nations people to be heard. Using a strengths-based approach, the course provides students to consider the intersections of history, culture and justice in the ways we have responded and should respond to crime.

This subject investigates culture, communication and representation. We examine the complexity of culture and our engagement with other cultures and culturally diverse thinking and perspectives. As part of this, we explore Indigenous cultures, histories, knowledge, perspectives and values. The unit also explores the relationship between media and culture, critically analysing media representations that inform our ideas about particular topics, other cultures and people. Students in this unit learn about Indigenous futurism and activism, the history of race and settler colonialism in Australia, and Indigenous studies and decolonial thinking. Students will also be introduced to contemporary expressions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and identities. This is a transformative unit that provides students with skills and knowledge to be agents of change in their communities and the world at large.
