Building Cultural Capability in Health and Community Services

This subject will explore how different cultural understandings and models influence and shape how we interpret the world around us, perceive ourselves and relate to other people. You will build your cultural capability (knowledge, skills and attitudes) in health and community services through self-awareness and reflection on the values, behaviours, beliefs and world views of yourself and others. The subject will be underpinned by the cultural knowledge, lived experience and perspectives of diverse individuals, groups and communities, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This understanding will support your ability to engage in respectful relationships, and to make ethical, reflective and culturally-sensitive decisions in diverse professional contexts and environments.

This interdisciplinary subject engages students in a detailed study of Indigenous experience of social and legal systems from invasion/colonisation to the present day. Beginning with the global historical context, the subject traces the ongoing struggle for Indigenous justice from the violent colonial frontier to the era of social media. The subject explores issues including Land Rights and Native Title, criminal justice, Indigenous ownership of intellectual and cultural property, and treaty negotiations at the local and national levels. Where appropriate, comparisons are drawn from the experience of Indigenous people in other places.

Indigenous Justice Issues

Students are enabled to constructively consider the interface of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous issues, histories, cultures and perspectives in education, the curriculum and the ‘hidden curriculum’. The subject has four foci which are integrated: identity/ nationalism, history, ethics and pedagogy. It considers these foci as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and non-Indigenous students, cultural engagement and racism in education and in Australian society. The subject enables students to develop an ethical position and critical reflection to recognise that cultural engagement in any classroom is contingent on the teacher’s awareness of his/her own cultural positioning; and the process and pedagogy enables students to identify and challenge institutional political, racial and social injustices in education. The subject enables students to own a position from which to be confident and capable to teach the interface of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous histories and perspectives since colonisation and to teach Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous students with cultural insight and respect. The subject fosters deep thinking and engagement with ethical issues that are vital to being an effective and transformative teacher capable of fostering restorative justice and reconciliation.
