Indigenous Lifeworlds: Sovereignty, Justice, Society

Indigenous Lifeworlds: Story, History, Country

This subject explores Indigenous lived realities through an Indigenous lens. Using the theoretical concept of the lifeworld, the focus is the Palawa/Aboriginal People of lutruwita/Tasmania. Country is integral to Palawa knowledge and wellbeing, and core learnings are built around a series of virtual tours of Country. The end-of-subject on-Country tour guided by Palawa Elders and Knowledge Holders offers students a personal learning engagement with Aboriginal people and culture. Equipping students with a greater understanding of the Indigenous lifeworld also enhances understanding of their own lifeworld and how it locates them in relation to Indigenous peoples.The journey into an Indigenous lifeworld in this subject focuses on Palawa story, history, and Country. Students will explore the history of lutruwita/Tasmania through Palawa perspectives, knowledges and worldviews from deep history to the present. The Palawa story is told in this subject by Indigenous voices in literature, art, and/or film. Country is integral to Palawa knowledge and wellbeing, and an exploration of Country offers students a personal learning engagement with Aboriginal people and culture.

This subject will explore how different cultural understandings and models influence and shape how we interpret the world around us, perceive ourselves and relate to other people. You will build your cultural capability (knowledge, skills and attitudes) in health and community services through self-awareness and reflection on the values, behaviours, beliefs and world views of yourself and others. The subject will be underpinned by the cultural knowledge, lived experience and perspectives of diverse individuals, groups and communities, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This understanding will support your ability to engage in respectful relationships, and to make ethical, reflective and culturally-sensitive decisions in diverse professional contexts and environments.

Country is integral to Aboriginal knowledge and wellbeing, and core learnings are built around a series of virtual tours of country. The end-of-subject on-Country tour guided by Palawa/Aboriginal Knowledge Holders offers students a personal learning engagement with Aboriginal people and culture. Equipping students with a greater understanding of Indigenous lifeworld also enhances understanding of their own lifeworld and how it locates them in relation to Indigenous peoples.Based around the themes of Palawa/Aboriginal sovereignty, justice, and society the subject relates these through the perspective of Indigenous scholarship and Aboriginal voices active in these spaces. Palawa society is explored from deep to contemporary time, highlighting the unbroken social and cultural links as well as the dramatic societal and cultural disruption of colonisation. Aboriginal sovereignty explores the historic and contemporary pursuit of rights, inclusive of land rights, political rights as articulated in the Uluru Statement and data sovereignty rights. Under the theme of justice, we examine reparative actions such as Tasmanian constitutional recognition, repatriation of Aboriginal human remains and the processes of formal apologies.

This subject engages students in a detailed study of Indigenous experience of Australian legal and justice systems, and of the historical interaction between Indigenous and Australian law. Contexts in which these themes are explored include Land Rights and Native Title, criminal justice, Indigenous dispute settlement, and Indigenous ownership of intellectual and cultural property. Where appropriate, comparisons are drawn from the experience of Indigenous people in other places.

Indigenous Justice Issues

Students are enabled to constructively consider the interface of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous issues, histories, cultures and perspectives in education, the curriculum and the ‘hidden curriculum’. The subject has four foci which are integrated: identity/ nationalism, history, ethics and pedagogy. It considers these foci as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and non-Indigenous students, cultural engagement and racism in education and in Australian society. The subject enables students to develop an ethical position and critical reflection to recognise that cultural engagement in any classroom is contingent on the teacher’s awareness of his/her own cultural positioning; and the process and pedagogy enables students to identify and challenge institutional political, racial and social injustices in education. The subject enables students to own a position from which to be confident and capable to teach the interface of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous histories and perspectives since colonisation and to teach Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous students with cultural insight and respect. The subject fosters deep thinking and engagement with ethical issues that are vital to being an effective and transformative teacher capable of fostering restorative justice and reconciliation.
