With its dual focus on policy analysis and applied social research, the Master of Public and Social policy (OUA) is a unique and innovative course in Australia. Through your studies, you will develop a deep knowledge of how policy is shaped, as well as the skills to help you analyse, design and deliver effective policy solutions to serve the public interest. You will also acquire the knowledge and skills to engage with and undertake research addressing global challenges facing contemporary societies, including sustainable communities, welfare reform, immigration, population health, drugs and alcohol.

Master of Public and Social Policy

Graduates in the Master of Ancient History (OUA) will have specialised knowledge in this discipline and skills for research and further learning. In this course, you will have the opportunity to gain advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in a range of relevant disciplines. In addition to the coursework offered through seminars, you will conduct research in your chosen field. You may only enrol in the course as an online student. The course caters for anyone who wishes to further their studies in Ancient History, support specific professional development (eg teachers), or prepare for higher degree research studies.

This subject was previously known as SOCX830 Doing Social Survey Research.This is a unit in applied survey research and data analysis. It will explain key survey techniques used and give you the chance to try them out in practice. The unit covers choosing survey methods, administering surveys and writing good survey questions. It also looks at some of the debates around the potentials and limits of surveys. Qualitative researchers often rely on surveys to prepare themselves for fieldwork or to &#39;triangulate&#39; their results from interview work. But ultimately, surveys are designed to enable statistical analysis of data, and therefore the unit covers some of the statistical techniques used. Understanding how quantitative analytical methods work with and augment qualitative methods requires some knowledge and use of statistics and a statistical package.

Doing Social Survey Research

Students will undertake studies in ancient history and/or archaeology relevant to their field of interest. Through extended research on a topic of their choice they will write a research question, design a research project and complete a short research paper. Students must choose a supervisor and research area from the list of available staff and staff specializations provided on iLearn, and contact the unit convenor by the first week of the session to obtain approval for the topic and choice of supervisor.

Archaeological and Historical Studies: Foundation in Archaeology or History

The unit aims to combine archaeology with history in the study of a number of key cities of the Roman Near East. The Silk Road and the Frankincense Road brought great prosperity to a number of cities of the Roman East, especially Petra, Palmyra and Dura Europos. Much of the history of these cities is written from a combination of archaeological reports and literary sources. Students will be given the opportunity to learn how to evaluate archaeological evidence against extant literary sources and also to study the architectural history of the Roman Near East.and how their histories aligned with the growth of long-distance trade through the area. The subject was formerly known as PICX862 The Crimes of the PowerfulThis subject examines crimes committed by powerful individuals and institutions: white collar crimes, corporate crimes and state crimes. From the Nazi death camps of WWII, to the Bhopal and BHP Gulf oil spill environmental disasters of more recent decades, the most harmful crimes are not those committed by offenders on the &#39;street&#39;, but rather by individuals and organisations occupying the most influential and privileged positions in our societies. This unit reorients the criminological gaze upwards, away from traditional street offenders and towards the most powerful criminals who occupy corporate boardrooms, parliaments and military organisations. Students will explore contemporary examples of each of these types of offence, examine the characteristics of powerful offenders, and address why crimes of this magnitude often go unaddressed by both contemporary criminologists and our systems of criminal justice.

Gaze back at some of the most powerful and criminal individuals and institutions. Categorise types of crime, such as white collar and state crime. Study notorious offenders and criminal acts, including the BHP oil spill and Nazi death camps.

The Crimes of the Powerful

The subject was formerly known as PICX860 Geopolitics and Geostrategy
The international security order is in a period of rapid transformation. This subject examines the major global geopolitical trends, including in the Indo-Pacific, the greater Middle East, Europe, as well as Latin America and Africa. It also analyses the influence of those dynamics on the geostrategies of key countries. Aside from exposing students to the concept of geopolitics as an analytical instrument, the subject will deal with a series of case studies, including the evolving US-Sino rivalry; the Sino-India great power game; the geopolitics of Southeast Asia; the rise of Iran, and the emerging roles of Saudi Arabia and Turkey; the question of the re-emergence of Russia and Germany as great powers; and the Subjected Kingdom in times of Brexit. The subject will provide students with in-depth understanding about the key contemporary global geostrategic dynamics and the implications for regional and international stability.

The Geopolitics of Asia

This subject was previously known as PICX813 The History of Intelligence
This subject considers how and why the practices of intelligence professionals and the organisations in which those professionals work have changed over time. It covers both ancient and modern intelligence, but focuses mostly on the post-World War II era. In surveying this history of intelligence as part of the broader development of national security policies and institutions, the subject provides context for some of the debates and discussions around intelligence today. In closely examining selected case studies of intelligence success and failure, students will develop their own skills in historical and analytical thinking - skills that are integral elements of intelligence tradecraft

Gain a thorough understanding of the history of intelligence via political, economic, social, technological and military perspectives. Research and evaluate the advance of technology and how it has affected intelligence collection and analysis.

History of Intelligence

This unit offers students the opportunity to develop a research project based on specific genres of creative writing and to reflect on how this affects their own creative practice. Students will have the opportunity to read and analyse different genres and to research current scholarship and publishing trends in these genres. Working independently, students will hone their critical research, writing, and presentation skills. By the end of this unit, students will gain a critical understanding of the contemporary academic and professional contexts of their own writing.

This unit is designed for those wishing to investigate the wide range of evidence from Roman Campania, how it has been interpreted and how, in turn, this has influenced our understanding of urban development in the Roman world.

Under the Shadow of Vesuvius: Archaeology in Ancient Campania

The Amarna Age in Egypt was a time of great change and upheaval; it is best known for the religious reforms of Amenhotep III / Akhenaten, who attempted to replace a long-established polytheistic theology with a monotheistic one. It was also a time when Egypt&#39;s position in the Near East was under challenge from a resurgent Hittite kingdom. The interpretation of the history of the period is controversial with diverse points of view. This subject examines central historical issues of the Amana Age (from the reign of Amenhotep III to Tutankhamun). Students will evaluate the modern scholarship of the period through analysing and interpreting the relevant written sources (royal and non-royal) in translation against the background of the archaeological record, art and architecture.

Egypt in the Age of Akhenaten and Tutankhamun

This subject examines the history of Constantinople from its foundation by Constantine the Great in the fourth century to its capture by the Ottoman Turks in the fifteenth century. Students will learn to analyse critically the cultural, ecclesiastical, intellectual, military, art and architectural history of the city, using literary, documentary and archaeological evidence.
