The Human Rights degree is designed to promote a critical understanding of the human rights discourse. The degree covers modern human rights institutions and how these work for state and non-state actors. The degree also explores the political, historical and philosophical development of ideas about human rights which underpin current systems. In recognition of the importance of a globalised understanding of human rights, the degree explores ideas about human rights from multi-disciplinary, multicultural and multi-religious perspectives, as well as looks at the roles of social movements, grass-roots campaigns and other actors have played in the development of human rights ideas and practices. The degree takes a problematising approach to education, provoking students to engage with a range of ideas and perspectives and to develop their own positions. The degree employs both theoretical and practical learning methods giving students the chance to put their learning into practice and to pursue individual areas of interest more deeply.

This subject measures the ideal of democracy against its capacity to deal with the diversity of the people. You will lstudy how different identities based on class, gender, sexuality, race (among others) articulate, negotiate and contest their place and (mis)representation in democratic life. You will study the heritage of the concept of democracy in relation to its concrete manifestations in nation states, and compare how the democratic ideal of living together in a political community is debated in various contexts. Topics include: sovereignty and Indigenous politics; free speech, censorship and political correctness; the gendered, sexualised and racialized character of culture wars and social change; religious expression and secularism; political activism, civil disobedience and violence; law and justice; and discourses of human rights. Texts include legal documents, petitions, government papers, propaganda, various media, and academic writings.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

Diversity Democracy Dissent

This subject is the second of two Masters project subjects involving supervised independent research in/of a discipline-relevant topic. This subject focuses on the completion and presentation of the research commenced in HUMN600 Masters Research Project 1, and will be taken in the next available study period following that subject. The specific nature of the project, the methods of research and the submission format will be determined in consultation with a discipline supervisor and may include professionally orientated tasks or components. The chosen research work involves supervised completion of a dissertation or creative project with exegesis.﻿Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject, you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Masters Research Project 1

Human rights are fundamental rights that are inherent to every individual. They are underpinned by concepts of human dignity and the essential equality of all people. The subject takes an interdisciplinary approach to the development, application and cultural relativity of human rights, and how they are placed alongside our notions of global justice.The subject is delivered in three modules. The first module explores the evolution of the liberal conception of human rights, with a focus on how the understanding of rights has changed over time. The second module introduces students to non-Western conceptions of human rights, with a focus on indigenous conceptions. The third module discusses who guarantees protection of rights, and how violators of rights have come to be punished in the international system. The material covered in this subject is global in both its geographic scope and its cultural awareness. The subject will provide you with the tools to make determinations about the nature of human rights in a globalised world.

U.S. historian William H. Chafe has called the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s “the most significant social movement in all of American history.” The aim of this subject is to explore in detail the central protests and demonstrations of this important movement. Our chronology will largely concentrate on the period from the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision through to the 1968 Poor Peoples’ Campaign. The subject, however, will also assess major changes in race relations since 1968, especially in the light of ongoing racial divisions in the United States. These divisions have been highlighted by the recent Black Lives Matter protests, which also illustrate the international reach of U.S. civil rights histories. Students will explore how the American civil rights movement was influenced by global events and how it inspired other protest movements, in the U.S. and beyond. They will also examine how a mass movement mobilises successfully, identifying the circumstances under which non-violent direct action is successful. In the process, they will assess the key role of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.This is a level 3 subject. This subject was previously known as Human Rights Instruments and Institutions.This subject explores international and national human rights systems, including the role of the United Nations and international and national laws in defining, protecting and upholding human rights. International Human Rights Law and Practice

This subject analyses the legal response to modern slavery with a focus on Australian law. The subject considers the compliance obligations in practical terms and in terms of their effectiveness. It also considers the international legal response to modern slavery: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1976, the Rome Statute (17 July 1998), 1926 Slavery Convention and 1956 Supplementary Covenant on the Abolition of Slavery.

Law and Modern Slavery

This course examines the trafficking dimension of modern slavery. This is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of threats or coercion, for the purpose of exploitation. Focal points of the course are ways to prevent and combat trafficking, protect and assist its victims, and promote cooperation.

Policing Human Trafficking

This subject outlines the context for reporting, acknowledging and managing modern slavery in and around the workplace as it relates to the production of services and goods and the ethical responsibility of organisations. The subject examines the UN mandate and the legislative framework within Australia. As identified through a range of public inquiries, modern slavery occurs within Australia. The realities of globalisation makes it inevitable that every country will also be exposed to the risk of modern slavery through the products it imports and the services it may utilise. It is necessary for modern policy-makers, businesses, and consumers to be aware of the risks and responsibilities. This course will examine strategies that may be adopted to mitigate these risks and act upon the responsibilities at an individual and organisational level.

Ethical Production of Goods and Services

The subject explores the historically evolved norms and laws as they relate to atrocity crimes and global justice issues, including slavery, climate change, migration and refugees, and labour exploitation. The subject provides a framework by which to understand why the justice issues identified in this subject were, at various times in times in modern history, tolerated, and how they have in time become taboo. In turn, the subject explores the opportunities for, and barriers to, solving these justice issues in a globalised world.
