This subject introduces the foundational concepts of human rights in social care practice. Students will explore the historical development of human rights and critically examine how these rights are influenced by dominant Western narratives. This analysis will address whose rights are prioritised, whose voices are heard, and how this impacts marginalised communities, particularly Indigenous peoples. Key themes covered include: Historical context of human rights; Global perspectives on rights and their interpretation across cultures, emphasising Indigenous viewpoints; Implications for social care practice, including culturally competent care, advocacy, and informed policy development.﻿Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Introduction to Human Rights and Social Care

In this subject, we will explore the pressing social justice issues affecting contemporary Indigenous peoples and communities in Australia. We will examine a range of social, political, and legal matters to understand the multifaceted experiences of Indigenous communities today. We will critically reframe the relationship between Indigeneity and social problems, focusing on the historical and systemic roots of these challenges. This will help us engage with deeper, structural factors. We will also highlight the resilience and agency of Indigenous communities by examining their unique and innovative solutions to these challenges. From grassroots movements to policy advocacy, Indigenous-led initiatives are creating positive change. Passion Projects in Indigenous Social Justice

This subject explores the evolution of the concept of social justice around the world, offering students a deep understanding of the complex interplay among conceptions of justice, economic structures, and national and global politics. History of Social Justice

Justice was once thought to be culturally specific; so no general standard of justice applied.  Both the idea of an inborn sense of justice and gloabalization have played important roles in the development of a general (global) idea of justice.  A concern with global justice often focuses on unjust treatment of people of non-western countries by people from western countries.  Both international aid and the various forms of security are affected by the idea of and demands for global justice.
