In this subject, you will first be introduced to concepts fundamental to the understanding of Human Physiology such as the organisation of the human body, homeostasis, basic cell structure and function, body fluids and the movement of molecules within body fluid compartments. The basics of nervous system and endocrine system function in the context of physiological regulation and homeostasis will then be explored. This information will provide the foundation for the study of major organ systems of the body including the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, renal, and reproductive systems. This subject will also include content on metabolism of nutrients and acid-base homeostasis.

Map the complex architecture of the human body and learn how it’s organised and structured. Navigate the journey of the smallest cell to the largest organ. Observe how the body performs and adapts, responding to stress and disease to maintain life.

In this subject you will study the major food sources, functions and metabolism of macro-nutrients (protein, fat and carbohydrate), alcohol, and micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and be aware of the consequences of over and under-nutrition. Principles of energy balance (energy intake and energy expenditure), basic techniques for assessment of nutrient adequacy of individual diets and simple techniques for assessing body composition in adults will be explored. You will also be introduced to the Australian Dietary Guidelines and Nutrient Reference Values, and the use of food guides in assessing the diets of populations. You will also be introduced to the Nutrition Society of Australia Competencies. This subject includes professional learning, practical experiences or portfolio activities which contribute to the completion of the Career Ready AdvantageTM award.

Through guided activities and reflective practice, you will assess your personal competencies and identify areas for improvement. You will explore various career options, set personal career objectives, and conduct thorough career research to understand the opportunities and challenges in your fields of interest. Additionally, you will learn to articulate your professional capabilities using industry-standard language, preparing you to present yourself effectively to prospective employers.

Career Options and Professional Identity

In this subject, you will focus on the scope, aims and techniques of sport and exercise psychology. The scope of sport psychology includes: its importance in changing community health behaviours; working with special groups such as disabled persons, elite athletes, and non-sport performers (for example, dancers), older populations, and individuals undergoing rehabilitation. The aim of sport psychology should not be limited to winning, but should be oriented to achieving personal goals, whether they be improving performance, fitness and health, or simply increasing enjoyment. Techniques include the use of cognitive-behavioural techniques to increase motivation, reduce competition anxiety, improve concentration, enhance teamwork, and manage stressors outside of the sport area (for example, work, study, family).This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your third- year.

Sport and Exercise Psychology

In this subject, you will undertake a work-based placement, either in a relevant external organisation or agency, or internally at La Trobe University. This allows you to engage in approved tasks designed to achieve specific learning objectives relating to continuous and life-long learning in a service-teaching mode. The aim of the subject is to provide you with an opportunity to interpret and apply theoretical concepts, in a supervised setting, to expand relevant skills, knowledge and attitudes. Your placement could include projects and activities in a wide range of programs and services, including mental health, disability, multicultural health, aged care, LGBTIQ health, Indigenous health, homelessness and housing, and refugee health. The seminar series accompanying the placement will orient you to professional and practical considerations of a work environment and allow you to gain a broad perspective about potential employment possibilities.

Participatory Field Placement

In this subject, you will learn about ethics, law and management in the Australian context, and how they will influence, or be the focus of, your practice as health professionals. An understanding of ethics, law and management pertaining to the fields of health care and public health is important for students studying in diverse professional areas including health promotion, public health, allied health, paramedicine, nursing, dentistry, occupational health and environmental health. Using contemporary resource materials, case studies and online peer to peer discussions, you will develop an understanding of fundamental concepts in the fields of ethics, law and management; gain experience in researching and discussing ethical, legal and managerial aspects of their practice as health professionals; and acquire basic skills in fundamental areas of management and in applying ethical principles.

Law and Management in Health

In this subject, you will examine various frameworks, models and approaches related to health promotion evaluation planning. You will gain knowledge and build skills to undertake the planning of an evaluation of a health promotion initiative. You will develop an understanding of the levels of evaluation and capability in choosing appropriate methods for each level of evaluation. You will have the opportunity to develop an evaluation plan that incorporates community participatory approaches, data collection, measurement quality and ethical considerations.

Health Promotion Planning and Evaluation

In this subject you will gain familiarity with the health care systems used around the world and will compare and contrast underlying rationales, policies and aims in the context of societal needs and resource demands. The interface between health and politics, economics and social structure will be considered and you will analyse the comparative advantages and disadvantages of approaches to health care provision. Topics to be covered include public and private systems, decentralised health care, national contributory plans such as Medicare, and social insurance, among others. Case studies will be drawn from health care systems around the world.

Health Care Systems

In this subject, you are introduced to public health perspectives on alcohol and other drugs. The subject will give you better understanding of harm minimisation and health promotion approaches that are currently practiced and develop your capacity to critique the complexity of health issues in modern society. The subject provides the historical context to drug use problems and encourages you to think creatively about difficult issues. Popular myths about drugs and drug use will also be addressed. This subject addresses La Trobe&#39;s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Essential, which entails developing ability to tackle problems creatively, generating new ideas and taking calculated risks to create change.This subject is designed for third-year students. To maximise your chances of success in achieving the intended learning outcomes, it is recommended that you complete this subject in your second or third- year.

Drugs, Health and Society

In this subject, we invite you as future health professionals to consider issues relevant to the health needs of a diverse multicultural population in Australia in terms of gender. You will explore current theoretical perspectives of gender and how these can be applied to better understand the impact gender has in relation to individuals, family and culture. This is examined with a particular focus on the health industry, workplaces, politics, sexuality, media and gender-based violence. Through lectures, directed reading and tutorials, you will explore how gender intersects with health within social, cultural and political contexts.
